At a glance

Tennis prize money at a glance

Short answerTennis prize money peaks at the Grand Slams, where the 2026 US Open paid each singles champion $5,500,000. A Masters 1000 or WTA 1000 champion earns roughly $665,000 to $1.15 million, and a 250 champion a small fraction of that.

Tennis prize money is paid by tournaments, not by the tours, and every event publishes its own figures. That is why the numbers are so scattered. Wimbledon pays in pounds, Roland Garros and the European clay events in euros, the Australian Open in Australian dollars and almost everything else in US dollars. This page brings the tennis tournament prize money of the biggest events into one place, each in the currency it actually pays, and checks every figure against the official release.

Three numbers frame the season. The 2026 US Open champion's cheque of $5,500,000 is the largest single payout in the sport. The Masters 1000 standard in 2026, at Cincinnati, Indian Wells, Miami and Shanghai, was $1,151,380 for the champion. And at the bottom of the tour, a WTA 250 title in Seoul paid $37,390. Everything else falls in between.

A few notes on reading it. "Total purse" is the figure each tour or tournament publishes. The ATP reports total prize money, the WTA often a total financial commitment that can include more than the prize pool, and the Slams their full purse including doubles and qualifying. Where an event plays both draws on one site, the men's and women's rows sit apart, and the equal-pay column compares them. A dash means the figure is not yet verified, never that it is zero.

The four ladders look alike because the majors follow the same logic, with a champion's cheque that roughly doubles the runner-up's, then a steady step down to the first round, which still pays more than many tour titles. The differences are in the scale and the currency. For each Slam's full table, dates and history, see the guides to the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open.

ATP prize money

ATP prize money: the Masters 1000s and the ATP Finals

Short answerIn 2026 the ATP's 12-day Masters 1000 events in Cincinnati, Indian Wells, Miami and Shanghai each paid $9,415,725, with $1,151,380 to the champion. The 2025 ATP Finals paid $15.5 million in total, up to $5,071,000 to an unbeaten champion.

ATP prize money is remarkably uniform at the top. The Masters 1000s that run twelve days with 96-player draws use the same scale: $9,415,725 in total and $1,151,380 for the champion at Cincinnati, Indian Wells, Miami and Shanghai in 2026, with the Canadian event in Montreal paying its champion $40 more. The European clay events pay in euros on a parallel scale, €8,235,540 in Madrid and Rome with €1,007,165 to the champion, and the one-week events in Monte-Carlo and Paris pay less, with Monte-Carlo at €6,309,095 in 2026. The Madrid, Rome and Shanghai figures come from the Madrid Open, Italian Open and Shanghai Masters guides.

The ATP Finals sit apart. The 2025 edition in Turin paid $15.5 million in total, and the structure rewards winning every match, and an undefeated champion could take $5,071,000. Below the 1000s, the ATP 500 events pay roughly a quarter as much. Washington's 2026 champion, for example, received $461,835, as our Citi Open prize money guide shows; the same scale applies at the Queen's Club Championships, Qatar Open, Dubai, Basel and Vienna, with the 250-level Stockholm Open lower still.

For individual events with full per-round tables, see the guides to the Paris Masters, the National Bank Open, the Cincinnati Open, the Washington Open and, for a WTA 250 week, the Korea Open in Seoul.

WTA prize money

WTA prize money and the road to equal pay

Short answerAt the biggest combined WTA 1000 events, Indian Wells, Miami and Beijing, the women's champion received $1,151,380 in 2026, the same as the men. Elsewhere the WTA scale is lower: $665,000 for the champion in Dubai, Doha and Wuhan.

WTA prize money is in the middle of a change. In June 2023 the WTA set out a pathway to equal pay, with equal prize money at the 1000 and 500 events played together with the men by 2027, and at single-week events by 2033. The ledger shows where things stand. Indian Wells and Miami already pay the women's and men's draws the same total, $9,415,725 in 2026, and Beijing paid its women's champion the same $1,151,380 (China Open guide). Madrid paid both champions the same €1,007,165 in 2026, and its WTA total, €8,029,650, sat a little below the ATP's €8,235,540.

Other events are further away. At Cincinnati the 2026 women's champion received $1,085,220 against $1,151,380 for the men, and in Washington the gap at the top was larger, $252,000 against $461,835 for the men. The WTA Finals are the women's biggest single payday (see the WTA Finals prize money guide). The 2025 edition in Riyadh had a purse of $15.5 million, and Elena Rybakina took $5,235,000 as champion. The old complaint that women earn the same at the majors for fewer sets is a separate question, covered in why women play three sets.

Growth only appears where we have verified two consecutive editions in the same currency, so the chart is shorter than the ledger. The pattern is still clear. The men's Masters 1000 purses mostly grew by 2 to 3 percent, and the men's total at Indian Wells was listed slightly lower in 2026 than in 2025, while several WTA events grew far faster, and the women's purses at the National Bank Open and Cincinnati rose by more than 40 percent from 2025 to 2026. The steepest falls belong to events that changed category, such as the Korea Open in Seoul, which dropped from WTA 500 to WTA 250 in 2026.

How it is paid

How tennis prize money is paid

Short answerPlayers are paid for the furthest round they reach, before tax, in the currency of the tournament. Doubles and qualifying have their own, smaller tables.

The rule is simple and often misunderstood. A player does not collect money per match won. Reach the quarterfinals and you receive the quarterfinal amount, nothing more for the rounds before. Lose in the first round and you still receive the first-round amount, which at a Grand Slam can cover a large part of a lower-ranked player's season. At the 96-draw Masters 1000 events the 32 seeds receive a bye, so their first match is in the second round and the money starts there.

None of it is take-home pay. Players are self-employed, so coaches, physios, travel and most accommodation come out of the same prize money, and many countries withhold tax before the money arrives. That is why a player ranked 120th can have a good-looking earnings line and a thin bank balance.

Where it comes from

Where tennis prize money comes from

Short answerFrom the tournaments. Each event funds its purse from its own revenue, chiefly ticketing, sponsorship and broadcast rights, and the tours set the minimum each category must offer.

Tournaments are owned by federations, private promoters or the tours' partners, and each one sets its own budget within the rules of its category. That is why two ATP 500s or two WTA 1000s can pay slightly different amounts, and why a tournament that wants to pay its women more, as the combined events moving toward equal pay do, has to find the money in its own budget.

For the bigger picture of what players earn over a career, including endorsements, see our ranking of the richest tennis players. For when each tournament is played, the ATP and WTA calendar has every week of the season.

FAQ

Tennis prize money: questions and answers

Short answerTen questions readers ask about tennis prize money, answered from the ledger and ladders on this page.

How much prize money is there in tennis?

At the top, a lot. The 2026 US Open singles champion received $5,500,000, and the tournament's total was $108,000,000. A Masters 1000 or WTA 1000 title is worth between about $665,000 and $1.15 million, and a WTA 250 title such as Seoul paid $37,390 in 2026.

What is the Wimbledon prize money breakdown?

The 2026 singles champions each received £3,600,000, out of a total of £64,200,000. The ladder on this page shows every round, and the Wimbledon guide lists the full table in pounds.

What is the breakdown of the prize money for the 2026 US Open?

The 2026 US Open paid a total of $108,000,000, with $5,500,000 for each singles champion. The US Open ladder above shows how the amount falls with every round.

Do tennis players get paid for each round they win?

No. Tennis prize money is paid for the last round a player reaches, not per match won. Losing in the quarterfinals pays the quarterfinal amount only.

Is tennis prize money equal for men and women?

At all four Grand Slams, yes. At combined ATP and WTA events, the WTA's 2023 pathway sets 2027 as the target year for equal prize money; in 2026 Indian Wells, Miami and Beijing already paid both champions the same, while the National Bank Open, Cincinnati and Washington did not.

Which tennis tournament pays the most prize money?

Among the four majors, the US Open pays the biggest singles cheque, $5,500,000 in 2026. Outside the Slams, the season finals pay the most to a single player, and an unbeaten ATP Finals champion could earn $5,071,000 in 2025.

How much does the winner of a Masters 1000 get?

In 2026 the champion at Cincinnati, Indian Wells, Miami and Shanghai received $1,151,380, and in 2026 at Madrid and Rome €1,007,165. Monte-Carlo, a smaller event, paid €974,370 in 2026.

Where does ATP tour prize money come from?

From the tournaments themselves. Each event pays its purse out of its own revenue, mainly tickets, sponsorship and broadcast rights, and the ATP and WTA set the minimum each category must pay.

Is tennis prize money taxed?

Yes. Prize money is taxable income, usually in the country where it is earned and again at home, depending on tax treaties. The figures on this page are before tax.

How often is the tennis prize money ledger updated?

Whenever a tournament publishes its new breakdown, and in a full review every Monday during the season. Every row shows its source and the date we checked it.
