Who coaches the top tennis players?
In briefOn the ATP side, Jannik Sinner, the No. 1, works with Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill, and Alexander Zverev with Alexander Zverev Sr. On the WTA side, world No. 1 Elena Rybakina works with Stefano Vukov and Aryna Sabalenka with Anton Dubrov.
Tennis coaches of top players rarely stand still for long, and most lists online are out of date within a season. This one is built from the place the tours themselves keep current, which is the coach field on each player's official ATP or WTA profile. We checked all 166 players by October 22, 2026, and every row links to the profile it comes from.
The picture that comes out is more varied than the stereotype of one famous coach per star. Many of the best players travel with two coaches who split the weeks between them. Some are coached by family: a father, in one case a husband. Others hire former tour stars, some of whom were rivals of each other a generation ago. And at least one of the biggest names in the sport, Novak Djokovic, listed no coach at all when we checked.

The pairings of the men's game's two best-known players are the most familiar in the sport. Jannik Sinner's profile lists a two-man team, Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill, both former tour players who now share the weeks of a very long season. Carlos Alcaraz's profile now names Samuel Lopez. Our profiles of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz follow both teams in more detail.
Family still plays a part among the men. Alexander Zverev's profile lists Alexander Zverev Sr., Ben Shelton's names Bryan Shelton and Flavio Cobolli's names Stefano Cobolli. Daniil Medvedev's coach is listed as Andrey Golubev, and Learner Tien works with Michael Chang.
Former tour stars are the other trend. Arthur Fils' team includes Goran Ivanisevic, who won $19.9 million as a player. Learner Tien's coach Michael Chang earned $19.1 million on tour. Andrey Rublev's team includes Marat Safin ($14.4 million as a player).
WTA
Who coaches the top WTA players?
In briefWorld No. 1 Elena Rybakina's WTA profile names Stefano Vukov; Aryna Sabalenka's names Anton Dubrov, Mirra Andreeva's Conchita Martinez, Jessica Pegula's Mark Knowles and Mark Merklein and Coco Gauff's Jean Christophe Faurel.
The WTA's top five read like a list of coaching styles. Elena Rybakina's profile names Stefano Vukov, Aryna Sabalenka's profile names Anton Dubrov, and Mirra Andreeva works with Conchita Martinez, whose own playing career earned $11.5 million in WTA prize money. Jessica Pegula's profile names Mark Knowles and Mark Merklein, and Coco Gauff is coached by Jean Christophe Faurel. See our profiles of Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff for the people around them.
Women coaching women is still the exception at the top: three of the WTA top 30 name a woman as coach, Mirra Andreeva with Conchita Martinez, Marta Kostyuk with Sandra Zaniewska and Anna Kalinskaya with Patricia Tarabini. Family is part of the story here too. Madison Keys' profile says she is coached by her husband, Bjorn Fratangelo. Our Madison Keys profile has more on the two of them.
Some of the best-known names in women's coaching appear on the list. Wim Fissette coaches Victoria Mboko, Tomasz Wiktorowski works with Naomi Osaka, Sascha Bajin with Diana Shnaider and Sven Groeneveld with Karolina Muchova. And Nikola Bartunkova, ranked No. 29, lists a team of three.

Changes
Coach changes this season
In briefWe add a coaching change here only when the tour or a major news outlet confirms it with a date. As of October 22, 2026, the tour profiles themselves record the moves below; none of them carries a date we could confirm.
Coaching changes spread on social media days before any official source catches up, and many of the lists that rank for them mix rumor with fact. So this section works the other way round, since it starts from what the official profiles say has changed. Aryna Sabalenka's WTA profile says: previously coached by Dmitry Tursunov and Didi Kindlmann, and it now names Anton Dubrov. Jessica Pegula's WTA profile says: recently parted ways with coach David Witt; formerly with Michael Joyce, and it now names Mark Knowles and Mark Merklein. Marta Kostyuk's WTA profile says: previously coached by Andrea Volpini, and it now names Sandra Zaniewska.
On the men's side, the most striking entry is an absence. Novak Djokovic's ATP profile names no coach at all. Carlos Alcaraz's profile names Samuel Lopez. When a change is confirmed with a date, it goes into this section and the directory row changes the same day; the check date on each row shows how fresh it is.
Partnerships
Famous coach-player partnerships on tour today
In briefFormer tour stars coaching today's players is the defining pattern: Andy Murray with Jack Draper, Goran Ivanisevic with Arthur Fils, Michael Chang with Learner Tien and Marat Safin with Andrey Rublev.
A generation ago these men played each other. Andy Murray, whose $64.7 million is the seventh-highest career total in men's tennis, is listed by Jack Draper's ATP profile alongside James Trotman. Goran Ivanisevic, with $19.9 million, is on Arthur Fils' team. Michael Chang ($19.1 million) coaches Learner Tien. Marat Safin, who won $14.4 million in prize money as a player, is part of Andrey Rublev's team.
Murray's move into coaching is the one that would have surprised most people a few years ago. The man with the seventh-highest prize money total in the history of the ATP now sits in the coaches' seats for a fellow Briton.
Other pairings are quieter but long-running. Ivan Ljubicic, who earned $10.2 million as a player, is listed as Felix Auger-Aliassime's coach. Magnus Norman, who earned $4.5 million as a player, is listed as Stan Wawrinka's coach. Lorenzo Sonego's profile names Vincenzo Santopadre, and Lorenzo Musetti's names Simone Tartarini. For the prize money these partnerships compete for, see our tennis prize money guide, and for what the players have earned over their careers, the richest tennis players tracker.

The rules
How coaching works on tour: the on-court coaching rules
In briefCoaching is allowed at ATP Tour and Challenger events, from the designated coaches' seats only: brief verbal advice when the player is at the same end, hand signals at any time, never during a point. The Grand Slams and the WTA set their own conditions under the same rule of tennis.
Coaching during a match is now written into the rules instead of being something umpires police with warnings. The 2026 ATP Rulebook states it plainly: "Coaching is allowed at ATP Tour and Challenger Tour tournaments" under a short list of conditions.
The coach must sit in the tournament's designated coaches' seats. Verbal coaching is permitted only when the player is at the same end of the court, and it may consist of "a few words and/or short phrases"; conversations are not allowed. Hand signals are allowed at any time coaching is permitted. Neither may interrupt play or hinder the opponent, and the coach may not speak to the player once the player leaves the court. During an opponent's medical timeout or toilet break, a player may go over to the box and talk.
Underneath the tour rules sits Rule 30 of the Rules of Tennis, printed in the same rulebook. It defines coaching as "advice or instruction of any kind and by any means to a player", lets each sanctioning body decide whether to permit it, and keeps one line fixed everywhere, which is that coaching is not permitted during the playing of a point. Team events with a captain sitting on court, such as the United Cup, are the exception that allows coaching from the bench. Players may also look at approved player analysis data at the times coaching is allowed, which is why the tablet on the bench is now an ordinary sight.
Abuse of these conditions is penalized under the code of conduct, with fines and penalties for the player. For how violations escalate, see our guide to the code violation in tennis.
