The board reads the ATP record weekly. Dimitrov turned professional in 2008 and has been a tour regular for almost two decades; his one-handed backhand, and the down-the-line version of it that he names as his favourite shot, is one of the best-known in the game.
Coaches
Who is Grigor Dimitrov's coach?
David Nalbandian and Jamie Delgado. Nalbandian joined in February 2026, after Xavier Malisse had started the season as head coach; Delgado came back for a second spell. The longest partnership of his career was with Daniel Vallverdu, about eight years over two spells, ending in late 2025.
- Franco DavinCoach, 2015 to 2016
Hired in September 2015, after the end of his partnership with Roger Rasheed following Wimbledon that year.
- Daniel VallverduCoach, 2016 to 2025
Took over after a mid-2016 slump and simplified his game; the ATP Finals title came in their second season. About eight years in all, over two spells, ending in late 2025.
- Xavier MalisseHead coach, 2025 to 2026
Appointed for the start of 2026, announced in Brisbane on December 30, 2025.
- David NalbandianCoach, 2026 to now
The former world No. 3 joined the team in February 2026.
- Jamie DelgadoCoach, 2026 to now
Back in the team in 2026 after a first spell that ended in 2025.
The first coach was at home. His father, Dimitar, is a tennis coach and the ATP says Grigor began playing with him "at a very early age". On tour, the Grigor Dimitrov coach list is long. Roger Rasheed worked with him until Wimbledon 2015, and Franco Davin, who had coached Juan Martin del Potro since 2008, took over that September.
Daniel Vallverdu arrived after a slump in mid-2016, when Dimitrov had fallen to around No. 40, and the ATP credits him with simplifying his game. Within 18 months Dimitrov had won the ATP Finals and reached No. 3. Their collaboration, interrupted and resumed, lasted about eight years and ended at the end of 2025.
The new era started in Brisbane on December 30, 2025, when Xavier Malisse, a former world No. 19 from Belgium, was named head coach. In February 2026 David Nalbandian, the Argentine former No. 3, joined. Jamie Delgado, who had worked with him until 2025, is back; the ATP now lists Nalbandian and Delgado as his coaches. The tennis coaches directory lists the teams of the other top players.

Wimbledon is his favourite tournament, according to his ATP biography, and it gave him his first major semifinal in 2014. The Wimbledon guide and the US Open guide cover those events; at the 2024 US Open he reached the quarterfinals before an injury ended his match against Frances Tiafoe, whose profile is here too.

Injury and 2026
Wimbledon 2025 and the road back
On July 7, 2025 he was leading Jannik Sinner 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 in the Wimbledon fourth round when he tore his right pectoral muscle and had to retire. He missed nearly four months, including the US Open.
It was one of the cruelest retirements of recent years. He was two sets up on the world No. 1 and then suffered a partial tear of the right pectoralis major. He was out for nearly four months and dropped to No. 44 by the end of 2025. In 2026 he has a 9-14 record so far, with a new team, and played the Davis Cup for Bulgaria in September, losing a three-set match to Holger Rune in Copenhagen.

His father, Dimitar, is a tennis coach and his mother, Maria, a former volleyball player. He was made an honorary citizen of Haskovo in 2016.
Haskovo, a city in southern Bulgaria near the borders with Greece and Turkey, is where it started. In 2016 it made him an honorary citizen, and in 2020 he donated ventilators to the city's hospital during the pandemic. His biography mentions a small habit worth repeating. Every night before sleeping he writes down three things he is thankful for. His dream opponents, he says, are Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe; his favourite athlete is Tiger Woods.
