The board reads the ATP record and changes every week, which counts for more with Rune than with anyone else on this site, because his ranking is moving fast. His full name is Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune. He turned professional in 2020 and in November 2022 became the first Danish man in the top 10.

Parents and family

Holger Rune's parents and family

His parents are Aneke and Anders Rune, and he has a sister, Alma. He has called his mother the person without whom he would not be where he is.

The Holger Rune parents question usually means his mother. Aneke Rune has commented publicly when his coaching team changed, and he credits her more than anyone. After his Paris Masters title in 2022 he put it plainly: "She's so important. Without her I would obviously not be here today. She's been supporting me since I was a little kid, and she's still here." On the same night he mentioned that his father was in the stands and his sister at home.

His father is Anders Rune. Tennis came through his sister: the ATP biography says he began playing at six "because his sister played". He became the world's No. 1 junior, and in 2019 he was a practice partner at the ATP Finals in London, hitting with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, his two idols.

Away from the court, his biography lists James Bond as his favourite film hero and juggling as a secret talent. He names dedication as his best quality and laziness as his worst.

Coaches

Who is Holger Rune's coach?

Kenneth Carlsen and Lars Christensen. Christensen coached him as a child and came back in October 2024; Carlsen, a former Danish tour player, has worked with him since August 2024. In between came Patrick Mouratoglou, Boris Becker and Severin Luthi.

Holger Rune coach timelineCoaches by season since he joined the tour full time. Christensen's childhood years are not drawn.
  1. Patrick MouratoglouHead coach, three spells, 2022 to 2024

Rune trained at his academy from 13; Mouratoglou coached him from October 2022 in three spells, the last starting in February 2024.

  2. Boris BeckerCoach, 2023 to 2024

Hired in October 2023; the team broke up after the 2024 Australian Open.

  3. Severin LuthiCoach, 2023 to 2024

Joined in December 2023 and left in January 2024.

  4. Kenneth CarlsenCoach, 2024 to now

A Danish former tour player, coaching him since August 2024.

  5. Lars ChristensenChildhood coach, back since 2024, 2024 to now

His coach from childhood; returned in October 2024 to work alongside Carlsen.

Few young players have changed coaches as often. Mouratoglou, at whose academy Rune trained from 13, took over in October 2022 and coached him in three separate spells. Becker joined in October 2023 and Luthi two months later; both were gone after the 2024 Australian Open, and Mouratoglou came back. The current Holger Rune coach setup, two Danes, is the calmest his team has looked.

Current ranking: No. 1,205 (ATP, Oct 19, 2026)

The ATP ranking counts a player's results over the previous 12 months, so a long absence erases a ranking week by week. Rune finished 2023 at No. 8 and 2025 at No. 15, but by October 2026 almost every result from his last healthy year had expired. That is why a player who reached No. 4 showed a four-digit number in October 2026. It says nothing about his level; it says he had played only four tour-level matches that season.

The players hub explains how the ATP and WTA rankings are counted, and lists the current top 10 on both tours.

Injury and comeback

The Achilles injury and the comeback

On October 18, 2025 he fully ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the Stockholm semifinal, while leading Ugo Humbert 6-4, 2-2. He had surgery and returned 11 months later at the Davis Cup in September 2026.

The injury came at the end of a strong year, and in April 2025 he had beaten Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(6), 6-2 in the Barcelona final for his fifth title and climbed back into the top 10. Then, in Stockholm, the tendon gave way. He missed every major of 2026.

The return came in Copenhagen, for Denmark against Bulgaria in the Davis Cup, where he beat Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) as Denmark won 3-2. He lost his first matches in Tokyo and Shanghai and withdrew from Brussels in October with a back problem.
