The ATP 500 is the fourth most competitive ATP tournament of its kind each year, behind the four Grand Slam tournaments, ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000. Previously renamed the ATP World Tour 500, ATP International Series Gold and ATP Championship Series, it was renamed the ATP World Tour 500 in 2009. The name came, it is not difficult to guess, from the number of points awarded to the winners of tournaments, namely the 500 rating points.
In total, the ATP Tour series has 13 tournaments in different countries. Germany is the only country to host two ATP 500 tournaments, the Halle Open and the Hamburg European Open.
