Leylah Fernandez Career
Leylah made her junior debut in 2017 at 15 during some ITF tournaments in Canada and the US. Still, it was not until January 2019 that she made her first final appearance at the Australian Open’s Girl Singles which she lost to Clara Tauson. Six months later, she made her second final appearance at the French Open and defeated Emma Navarro to become the first Canadian female tennis player to win a Junior Grand Slam since Eugenie Bouchard did so at the 2012 Wimbledon Championship.
She finally made her professional debut at the Gatineau Challenger in 2019 and went on to win both the Singles and Doubles titles partnering with Carson Branstine. Before the end wrapped up, she also finished as a runner-up at an ITF tournament in Granby.
She made her Grand Slam debut a year later at the 2020 Australian Open, although she was knocked out in the first round. She recorded her first Top 5 win the following week when she defeated the then World’s number 5, Belinda Bencic, at the Billie Jean King Cup. Leylah also reached the first WTA final at the 2020 Mexican Open after 12 set winning streak, although she lost the final to Heather Watson. She continued participating in some tournaments but ended the year without a title.
She began 2021 with four consecutive losses in the first round of the tournaments she participated in. She went on to win the 2021 Monterrey Open as her first recognized professional career Singles title. Surprisingly, she was the youngest player in the tournament (18) and won the title without losing a set. Her fine form continued at the 2021 US Open, and she almost made history, but for her loss in the final.
Leylah began her campaign at the 2021 US Open with a victory over defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round claiming three sets, and then knocked out former World Number 1 and three-time winner Angelique Kerber, winning another three sets in the fourth round. In the tournament’s quarterfinals, she defeated 4th seed Elina Svitolina to proceed to the semifinals, where she schooled Aryna Sabalenka. She eventually lost to sensational British teenager Emma Raducanu in straight sets to deny her the title.
She also made it to the 4th round of the Indian Wells the same year. She rounded off the year with the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award given by the Canadian Press to the female athlete of the year for her excellent performance.
Current Season
Leylah defended her Monterrey title at the 2022 Monterrey Open as she waved off threats from Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, Zheng Qinwen, Wang Qiang, and Beatriz Haddad Maia en route to the final. In the final, she defeated Camila Osorio to record her second professional WTA title. She also made it to the semi-finals of the Doubles category at the 2022 Indians Wells alongside Alize Cornet and participated in some other tournaments.
