Leylah Annie Fernandez was born on September 6, 2002 in Montreal, Canada. Her father Jorge is from Ecuador and her mother is Filipino Canadian. Leyla has an athletic family, her dad is a former professional soccer player, and her sister Bianca Joly is also trying her hand at tennis.
Leila first picked up a racket at the age of five. Leila’s first training sessions took place on her home courts, but then her family moved to Florida where she was taken on by professional instructors. The results were not long in coming: already at the age of fifteen, the girl first tried her hand at the Roland Garros junior tournament, where she reached the semifinals.
