Elina Svitolina is a professional tennis player from Ukraine, a native of Odesa. She was born on September 12, 1994, in a sports family: her father was a professional wrestler and her mother was a rower. The girl’s older brother got on the court early, and although her parents didn’t plan their daughter’s sports career, she also picked up a racket. Soon coaches recognized her undoubted talent.

When Elina was 13 years old her family moved to Kharkiv. There, her game was noticed by businessman Yuri Sapronov, who decided to invest in the career of the promising junior player.

Svitolina made her professional court debut in 2010, appearing in an ITF tournament in Kharkiv, where she reached the second round. But officially the start of the Ukrainian career refers to 2010 when she won Roland Garros Junior singles and reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in doubles. A few weeks later the tennis player took part in an ITF tournament in Kharkiv where together with Katerina Kozlova won the first trophy of her career.

A year later Elina celebrated her victory in the singles finals of the ITF tournament in Turkey. The young tennis player’s performance impressed representatives of the National Tennis Federation so much that soon afterward she was invited to join the Ukrainian national team and took part in the Fed Cup. In the summer of 2012, Svitolina played in a WTA tournament in Azerbaijan for the first time and later overcame the qualifying round of the U.S. Open, losing in the first round of the main event to Ana Ivanovic. Having won two junior tournament titles, the Ukrainian ends the season in the middle of the second hundred of the WTA singles ranking.

The 2013 season brought Elina her first WTA title won in Baku. Successful performances helped her to make a qualitative breakthrough in the ranking, finishing in the 40th position.

In 2014, Svitolina made it to the third round of the Grand Slam tournament (Australia) for the first time. Despite the fact that Wimbledon and the US Open were generally unsuccessful for her, the tennis player won two WTA trophies during the season, in particular, defending last year’s title in Baku. At the same time, she ranked in the top 30 of the world singles rankings.

The next season the tennis player continued to progress, battling equally with such rivals as Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Alize Cornet. Elina gradually improved her results at Grand Slam tournaments (in particular, reaching the quarterfinals of Roland Garros for the first time in her career) and won a ticket to the WTA Elite Trophy, where she reached the semifinals.

In March 2016, Svitolina won the trophy of the WTA competition in Kuala Lumpur. After receiving an invitation to her country’s Olympic team, she played several matches in Rio de Janeiro, beating Serena Williams, among others.

Despite injuries, the Ukrainian showed brilliant results in 2017, winning two Premier 5 tournaments, which allowed her to participate in the WTA Finals at the end of the season. Although Svitolina did not make it out of the group, despite defeating Simona Halep, a season later she again qualified for the prestigious competition and managed to win it.

In 2019 Svitolina did not show outstanding results, but maintained her place in the elite ten of the singles rankings. In addition, she also managed to show excellent results on grass, reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon for the first time.

The Ukrainian is also in good shape for the 2020 season: she won two tournaments (Monterrey and Strasbourg) and moved up to No.5 in the singles rankings despite a cut-down format.
