Elina Svitolina, born on September 12, 1994, is a leading professional tennis player hailing from Ukraine. Over her career, she’s attained remarkable heights, including reaching the world No. 3 position in singles rankings and winning 17 WTA Tour singles titles. Known for her formidable performance on the court, she has earned the respect of tennis enthusiasts worldwide, making her journey in the sport a story worth telling.
Svitolina made history by becoming the first Ukrainian woman to break into the world’s top 10 tennis rankings, surpassing her compatriot Alona Bondarenko. Her impressive record includes key titles like the 2018 WTA Finals, the Dubai Tennis Championships, the Italian Open, and the Canadian Open. In addition to her singles performance, she has also made a mark in doubles, securing two titles at the Istanbul Cup in 2014 and 2015. Notably, Svitolina also became the first Olympian to win a tennis medal for Ukraine, securing the bronze at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Elina Svitolina Playing Style
Elina Svitolina is known for her defensive baseline playing style. While it may seem rather relaxed or casual at a glance, don’t let that fool you. When Svitolina is in form, she can put on a brilliant display on the court.
Svitolina’s game is defined by consistency and moderation. Her groundstrokes, while not the most powerful, are reliable and land deep into the court. She can, however, generate a good amount of power when the opportunity arises. Her backhand is particularly strong, especially when hitting down the line or on the run.
However, Svitolina does have some vulnerabilities in her game. Her second serve is often viewed as a weak spot that opponents may target for return winners. Moreover, she can struggle when up against a player who is playing very aggressively and making few unforced errors.
Despite these challenges, Svitolina has a strong first serve, peaking at speeds of 110 mph (175 km/h), which allows her to serve aces. While volleying at the net isn’t her strongest suit, she does have good reflexes and can cover the court quickly to deal with short balls.
Interestingly, even though her preferred surfaces are grass and clay, she has yet to make it to a singles final on grass. However, her consistent and well-rounded game gives her the potential to compete well across all surfaces.
