Anhelina Kalinina Career
Anhelina Kalinina, born on February 7, 1997, hails from Nova Kakhovka in Kherson Oblast, Ukraine. Nova Kakhovka, situated on the left bank of the Dnieper River, is often referred to as an oasis due to its desert-like landscape. The talented tennis player first gained recognition in the U-18 category, where she excelled at international junior tournaments, ultimately entering the world’s top 10 and earning invitations to adult competitions.
Kalinina began participating in adult ITF competitions in 2013 at the age of 16. Despite facing some setbacks, she continued to make progress, winning multiple $25,000 tournaments and breaking into the top 150 by 2015. However, a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery forced her to take a six-month break from the sport. She later teamed up with former world number one, Dinara Safina, for training near New York.
The 2018 season saw Kalinina on an upward trajectory, winning two consecutive $25,000 events in the United States and reaching the second round of the US Open. Despite facing challenges in major tournaments, she managed to come close to the top 100 in the world ranking. In 2019, she experienced a slump in performance, but her 2020 season started on a high note with a finals appearance at a $100,000 tournament in Midland.
2021 proved to be Kalinina’s best season yet, as she won several titles and reached the finals of the WTA 250 event in Budapest, only losing to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. At the US Open, she reached the second round for the second time in her career and climbed into the top 60 of the world ranking.
In 2022 she showcased notable performances in the Rome WTA, Madrid WTA, and Charleston tournaments, reaching the second round, quarterfinals, and quarterfinals, respectively. Kalinina also competed in the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, with her best performance being a second-round appearance in the US Open. Despite some setbacks in other tournaments, she managed to claim one lower-level tournament title at Limoges.
At the Australian Open, Kalinina had a decent run, advancing to the third round by besting CoCo Vandeweghe and Petra Kvitova. However, she was eventually defeated by Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets.
In February, Kalinina participated in the Hobart tournament, where she reached the quarterfinals, defeating Rebecca Marino and Tatjana Maria along the way. Unfortunately, she lost to Sofia Kenin in a three-set battle. The following tournaments in Linz and Doha did not bring much success, as she was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Anna-Lena Friedsam and the qualifying round by Lauren Davis, respectively.
Kalinina’s performance improved in the Dubai tournament, where she defeated Veronika Kudermetova and Dayana Yastremska before succumbing to Karolina Pliskova in a tight three-set match in the Round of 16. At the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments, she managed to reach the third and second round, respectively, but was defeated by Maria Sakkari and Sofia Kenin.
In April, Kalinina participated in the Charleston tournament but was eliminated in the first round by Anna Kalinskaya. She then played in the Madrid WTA, where she reached the second round before being defeated by Mayar Sherif.
