Carlos Alcaraz Career
The Spaniard made his debut very early, trying his luck on the courts at home Futures at just 14. Despite the fact that no one considered the young tennis player seriously, he successfully qualified, reaching the quarterfinals. However, the coach was in no hurry to throw his mentee into the next battle and paused, releasing him on the court for the next time only in early 2019.
After showing a great result at the ground Futures in Palmanova (semifinals), Carlos receives an invitation to the first Challenger of his career, where he unexpectedly beat the young Italian star Yannick Sinner, and then almost knocked out of the net the experienced Lukas Rosol (Czech Republic). He made it to the third round at the Challenger in Murcia and soon had a chance to fight for a place in the main draw at the ATP Barcelona.
Alcaraz failed to qualify and switched to the junior Grand Slam tournaments for a while before returning to his home courts, winning his first career Futures.
Despite his success, the coaching staff decided not to overload the young tennis player’s schedule, limiting him to a trip to L’Aquila. Soon afterwards Carlos tries his skills on the Mallorca Challenger, but his debut on an unusual surface was unsuccessful.
2020 brought the young Spaniard a string of junior series titles, starting with the Winter Futures in Manacor. Soon after, Carlos received a special invitation from the organizers of the ATP tournament in Rio de Janeiro. After beating fellow countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round, Alcaraz lost in the next round to Federico Coria, but was able to make a very favorable impression on fans and experts who saw him as a rising star of great tennis.
After a forced pause on the tour due to a record COVID-19 spread, the Spaniard returned to the court and won his first Challenger trophy in Trieste, Italy in August. With two more titles, he finishes the year in the top 150.
In 2021 Alcaraz drew the attention of the tennis community for the first time at the Umag. He managed to beat experienced opponents, including Richard Gasquet in the final and won his first ATP Tour trophy.
At the end of the season Carlos put together a great streak that would propel him to the quarterfinals of the US Open and a qualifier for the Next Gen ATP Finals.
At the Next Gen ATP Finals, the Spaniard again dominated the field, beating Brandon Nakashima, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, and Holger Rune in the group round. Carlos defeated Sebastian Korda in the final and won the trophy at the Next Gen ATP Finals.
In 2022, Alcaraz had a breakthrough year in his professional tennis career. He won his first ATP 500 title at the Rio Open, defeating Diego Schwartzman in the final and making his debut in the top 20 in the singles rankings.
At the Indian Wells Masters 1000, Alcaraz reached his first quarterfinal and semifinal, defeating defending champion Cameron Norrie before losing to Rafael Nadal. He also became the youngest men’s champion in the history of the Miami Open when he defeated 6th seed Casper Ruud to win his first Masters 1000 title.
Alcaraz continued his success on clay, defeating top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open and winning the title. He then made history by becoming the first teenager to defeat Rafael Nadal on clay at the Madrid Open. He followed that up by defeating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and going on to win the tournament, defeating defending champion Alexander Zverev in the final and climbing to a career-high of world No. 6 in the rankings.
Despite an ankle injury that forced him to withdraw from the Italian Open, Alcaraz made his seeded debut at the French Open and reached the quarterfinals. He also reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time in his career. Alcaraz reached the final of the Hamburg Open and the Croatia Open, resulting in ranking jumps to world No. 5 and No. 4 respectively. He ended the year with a bang by winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open, defeating Casper Ruud in the final and reaching a career-high of world No. 1 in the rankings.
