Zheng Qinwen Career
Zheng Qinwen, born on October 8, 2002, hails from Shiyan City in Hubei Province, eastern China, an area with a population of approximately 3.4 million people. Growing up, she dabbled in various sports, including table tennis, but began focusing on tennis at the age of six. Zheng’s potential was quickly recognized by her coaches, and by the age of 11, she caught the attention of representatives from the renowned company IMG, with whom she soon signed a contract.
Zheng found inspiration in the achievements of her compatriot Li Na, who won the Roland Garros junior championship in 2011 and the Australian Open title in 2014. Besides Li Na, Zheng also admired the legendary Swiss player, Roger Federer. As a teenager, she relocated to Barcelona for training and started competing in senior (U-18) category junior tournaments at the age of 15. In 2018, she claimed victory at the prestigious Eddie Herr tournament, and in 2019, she reached the semifinals twice at major events, ranking sixth.
Zheng made her professional tennis debut in early 2018, participating in nine tournaments throughout the season and finishing at 794th in the world rankings. In 2019, as she balanced junior and adult competitions, Zheng only reached the quarterfinals once at the 25,000 level and secured one victory in a WTA 250 qualifying match, placing her within the top 700.
Following a tour pause in the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Zheng achieved notable successes, winning a 15,000-level tournament in Italy and continuing her winning streak at a 25,000-level event in Spain. In September and December, she claimed two more titles in the same category in the Czech Republic and Italy, propelling her to the top 300 within a few months.
In the 2021 season, Zheng maintained her momentum, winning a 25,000-level tournament in Germany before facing some health issues. After recuperating, she enjoyed a series of successes on clay, winning a 60,000-level event in the Czech Republic and reaching the second round of the WTA 250 in Palermo, Italy, after starting as a qualifier. Following a brief hiatus, Zheng returned to the court in mid-October, demonstrating strong form once more. By the end of the year, she had solidified her position within the top 150 of the world rankings.
She began her impressive run by reaching her first WTA Tour semifinal at the Melbourne Summer Set 1, where she eventually lost to second seed Simona Halep.
Zheng continued her meteoric rise by qualifying for her first major event at the Australian Open, which propelled her to a top 100 ranking at world No. 80. Her debut at the French Open saw her defeating a former champion, Simona Halep, and advancing to the fourth round before succumbing to world No. 1, Iga Świątek.
Zheng’s Wimbledon debut saw her advancing to the third round, where she was defeated by the eventual champion, Elena Rybakina. In August, she secured her first top-10 win against Ons Jabeur at the Canadian Open, entering her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. She reached the third round at the US Open before being beaten by Jule Niemeier.
Her performance at the Pan Pacific Open in Japan was historic, as Zheng became the first Chinese teenager to reach a WTA Tour final, which she eventually lost to Liudmila Samsonova. By defeating top seed Paula Badosa in the second round, Zheng scored her first completed top-10 win.
Zheng’s impressive run in 2022 saw her reach numerous milestones. She became the first Chinese teenager to reach the top 30, ranking at world No. 28 on 26 September 2022.
