The highest-ranked African and Arab tennis player in WTA and ATP rankings in history and currently No.1 Tunisian player is 28-years-old Ons Jabeur.
Ons Jabeur was born on 28th August 1994 in Ksar Hellal, a small town in Tunisia and grew up in the larger nearby coastal town of Sousse. Her mother played tennis recreationally and introduced her to the sport at the age of three. Jabeur trained under the coach Nabil Mlika for ten years from ages four to thirteen, originally starting to work with him at a tennis promotion centre at her school. At thirteen years old, Jabeur moved to the capital city of Tunisia to train at the Lycée Sportif d’El Menzah, a national sport high school for the country’s up-and-coming athletes, where she stayed for several years. She also later trained in Belgium and France starting at the age of sixteen.
In her junior career she won 2011 French Open and after a decade playing at the ITF level, in 2017 she started competing more regularly on the WTA tour. She won three ATP titles so far; her first one at 2021 Birmingham Open made her the first Arab women to win a WTA tour title. By wining 2022 Madrid Open, a WTA 1000 event, she become the first Tunisian and Arab player to win at this level. Ons reached hers first major final at this year Wimbledon and shortly came the second one at US Open. Her best WTA ranking so far is World No.2.
“I want to see more players from my country, from the Middle East, from Africa,” she said. “I think we didn’t believe enough at certain point that we can do it. Now I’m just trying to show that. Hopefully people are getting inspired.”
She is very popular in her country and after the success made at All England club in London, Post Tunisia unveiled a stamp which features the tennis star fist-pumping in one hand and holding the national flag in another. Jabeur is also a huge football fan and can often be seen kicking a tennis ball around on court during practice. Her favorite football club is Real Madrid and as for tennis her idol is Andy Rodick.

Since October 2015, Ons is married to former Tunisian fencer and currently fitness coach, Karim Kamoun.
Karim Kamoun
Karim Kamoun was born on 22nd December 1986 in Tunis, the capital and largest city of Tunisia. His father is Abdelwahab Kamoun who works at Tunisia Ministry of Youth and Sport and his mother Raissa Kamoun who is from Russia, is a housewife. Karim has a sister, Lilia Kamoun who is a gymnastics coach. He went to the Lycee Sportif d’El Menzah to take his high school education and completed his bachelor’s degree from University in Tunisia.
Karim is a former high-level professional fencer and represented Tunisia in a several tournaments, like the African Fencing Championships and Pan Arab Games. He was notably a gold medalist in team foil at the 2007 African Games and also won many individual and team champs at the African Championships between 2008 and 2011. After retirement from fencing, he worked as a fencing coach in Qatar. Then he finished his master’s degree in sports science and became a fitness coach in 2017. Since then Karim is a physical trainer of his wife Ons and accompanies her to all tournaments where she plays, providing great support.
The couple first met at the sports high school of El Menzah in Tunisia, are together since 2013 and after two years of dating they got married in a private ceremony and shared about it via social media. They don’t have children yet; however Ons has shown she has respect for motherhood and might go to that path one day, but for now they are focused on taking her career on highest level. She publicly praised her friend and fellow tennis star Tatjana Maria for returning to the game after having two children.
Tatjana deserves a lot of respect,” said Jabeur. “The way she plays, the way she fights. If I didn’t see her two kids, I would say she never had them. It’s really inspiring for a lot of women. I have a lot of respect for her.”
They have one more thing in common, their admiration for Serena Williams. Ons in few occasions played in doubles alongside her and Karim called his meet with Serena magical. They even invited Serena and Venus to come at their home in Tunisia. As Ons’s fitness coach Karim strives to make his wife play great tennis like Serena did.
“I was more focused on how she hits the ball, how she accelerates with the hand and I was watching her and at the same time imagining what I can do with Ons, in fitness – my job – how to get similar things to do with Ons like Serena is doing,” Karim said in an interview.
Ons and Karim currently reside in their home country, living together in beachside city of Sousse. She is very much loved and respected in her homeland, people even while driving stop to give her a round of applause and cheer for her. In an interview with the BBC she said – “When I go back to Tunisia, people are very happy to see me. My husband Karim jokes he doesn’t want to go to the shopping mall with me anymore because it gets too busy with people coming up to me. But I love it and connection with people is one of the reasons why I started playing tennis.”

Does Ons Jabeur have any children?
Ons Jabeur and her husband Karim Kamoun do not have any children at this time, but that does not stop Ons from enjoying her life. Ons is a professional tennis player from Tunisia who is currently focusing on her career. She has said that she is waiting for the perfect time to have a baby, but hopefully, we will hear about her pregnancy soon. In the meantime, Ons enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She has said that she loves the energy of children. It is clear that Ons is a kind and loving person, and she will make an excellent mother when the time comes.
