Born on August 28, 1994, Ons Jabeur is a tennis player from Tunisia who has reached the highest rankings of any African or Arab player in the history of WTA and ATP. Jabeur was introduced to tennis by her mother at a tender age of three in their hometown, Ksar Hellal, in Tunisia. She later honed her skills under the guidance of Nabil Mlika, a tennis coach, for ten years from the age of four. When she turned thirteen, Jabeur relocated to Tunisia’s capital to receive further training at the Lycée Sportif d’El Menzah, a renowned sports school in the country.
Her professional journey started with a junior career highlight: she clinched victory in the 2011 French Open. After playing in the ITF level for a decade, Jabeur made her transition to the WTA tour in 2017. Since then, she has collected three ATP titles. Her win at the 2021 Birmingham Open made her the first Arab woman to claim a WTA tour title. Further, she etched her name in the history books as the first Tunisian and Arab player to triumph in a WTA 1000 event by winning the 2022 Madrid Open. Her successful streak continued with her first major final appearance at Wimbledon 2022, followed by a similar feat at the US Open the same year. Her career-best ranking to date is World No.2.
Jabeur often expresses her desire to inspire more tennis players from her country, the Middle East, and Africa. “We didn’t believe enough at a certain point that we can do it. Now, I’m just trying to show that. Hopefully, people are getting inspired,” she once said.
Her popularity in Tunisia skyrocketed after her outstanding performance at Wimbledon, leading Post Tunisia to release a stamp featuring Jabeur celebrating with a fist pump and holding the national flag. Jabeur’s interests go beyond tennis as she’s a huge football fan. You can often spot her kicking a tennis ball around the court during practice. Her favorite football club is Real Madrid, while her tennis idol is Andy Rodick.
