Beatriz Haddad Maia’s Career
Haddad Maia had quite a smooth junior career as she won her first professional title at a Doubles tournament (with Flavia Guimaraes) at 14. The $10k tournament was held at Mogi Das Cruzes in September 2010. A year later, when she was 15, she won her first professional ITF Singles at another $10k tournament in Goiania.
By the time she became a professional in 2014, she was already ranking as the Number 2 Female tennis player in Brazil. Later in 2015, she won her first WTA Doubles title alongside a fellow Brazilian player, Paula Cristiana Goncalves, at the Bogota Open.
She got another professional Singles title at the Clare Open and won the Doubles title of the same tournament, partnering with Genevieve Lorbergs. The following year (2018) marked the dawn of her woes as she suffered from consistent injuries and eventually lost her form.
While hoping to make a ground-breaking comeback, she was again charged for doping, which cost her ten months of playing time before she was cleared when it was discovered that her food was contaminated.
Current Season
She eventually returned to the court in 2022, although she was soon faced with some difficulties, which included testing positive for Covid-19 just before the Dubai Open.
In May 2022, she was back in form and won her two professionally recognized WTA Singles titles at the Birmingham Open and Nottingham Open. She also won some Doubles titles within the past few months to increase her title claims.
She shocked the world as she made her way to the finals of the Canada Open in Toronto, defeating current Number 1, Iga Swiatek; Olympic Champion Belinda Bencic; and thrashed ex-World Number 1, Karolina Pliskovato reached the final. In the final, she lost to Romanian-born Simona Halep in three sets.
Currently, she is ranked number 16 in the World Single category and 21 in the World’s Doubles ranking.
