Spain’s new tennis sensation, an expert on clay with a fierce right hand and an explosive game, the youngest ever men’s World No.1 and new king of tennis, is Carlos Alcaraz.
Carlos Alcaraz Garfia was born on 5th May 2003 in El Palmar, the most populous village in Murcia, Spain. His parents are Carlos and Virginia and he has three brothers, Alvaro, Sergio and Jamie. He grew up in a family with an affinity for tennis – his grandfather was the first member of a local tennis club and his father, a semi-pro who once finished runner-up in the Spanish Championship, also ran a tennis academy. Carlos was growing up with a role model like Nadal and influenced by his father, started playing tennis at the age of four at the Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia where his father was the tennis academy director. In 2018 when he was 15-years old, Carlos moved to Alicante to train and improve his game at Equelite JC Ferrero Sports Academy.
Carlos is often compared to Nadal but he presents defensive abilities such as Pablo Carreno Busta and bears the resemblance of Nicolas Almagro for a creative, offensive style of play. However, Carlos is making a name for himself. He is all round tennis player, but primarily employs an aggressive baseline style of play with an emphasis on a high winner count from his forehand. Also key to his game is his well-placed and greatly-disguised drop shot.
After turning pro in 2018, until season 2022 he won a totally of three ITF Futures, four ATP Challenger titles, and one ATP title. Alcaraz started his 2022 season to remember by winning Rio Open, followed by a title at the 1000 Masters in Miami. Then he won two more titles on his home court in Spain, at Barcelona Open and Madrid Open. The icing on the cake came at US Open, where he won his first Grand Slam which led him to World No.1 at the ATP ranking. Having in mind that he is only nineteen, his time in World tennis is yet to come.
His idol growing up was Nadal, with whom he shares his fondness for clay courts. “I know that there will never be another like Rafa in history. I am Carlos.” stated Alcaraz. He also likes football and he counts himself as a Real Madrid fan. In an interview, asked what his favorite song is, he replied “The Eye of the Tiger”. Enough said about his ambitions in this sport.

Carlos is in the news thanks to his sporting victories. He is currently number one in the ATP ranking, the youngest to do so. However, he continues to be discreet with his private life, especially when it comes to love. Although there are many media that affirm that the tennis player’s heart has been occupied for a long time, there are also many that deny a possible love relationship. The truth is that all suspicions point to a girl from Spain, called Maria Gonzalez Gimenez.

The young woman is from Murcia, Spain, and is said that they have been childhood friends from the same city. The couple first met at the academy where Carlos started training at an early age. Maria is also a tennis player, now playing for Murcia Club de Tennis. In addition to playing tennis, Maria is passionate about the beach and practices surfing, either at one of the beaches of La Manga, or that of Cabo de Palos, as well as that of Formentera. She is enrolled at the University of Murcia where she studies for a bilingual law degree, suggesting she could be keen to do a little globetrotting herself.
The young couple has never been seen together publicly, but in view of their comments on the networks, they may soon be seen. Alcaraz commented on many of her Instagram posts in a very affectionate way: “The most beautiful of all” or “Brutal, my girl” are some of his reactions when seeing the photos of the girl. Recently, both shared a photo together through their Instagram stories in which you could read: “I miss you”. During September, Davies Cup matches were held in Valencia, in which Carlos Alcaraz competed. Precisely the same place and time that Maria has traveled to, as has been seen in her Instagram stories, since she has taken a walk through the center of Valencia, has gone to see the tennis competition, and has had breakfast in the company of a second person.

The photos and sporadic comments between the two tennis players must be added that several members of Carlos Alcaraz’s family follow Maria on her personal account, which also seems to indicate that there is more than just a friendship between them. However, the exact length of their romantic relationship is unknown, as the couple don’t share plenty of details and are both relatively quiet about it. They do not live together yet, with Alcaraz still officially residing at his parents’ house in Murcia, although he has been on road for most of the year.
