Marina Zanevskaya was born on August 24, 1993, in the picturesque city of Odessa in southwestern Ukraine, home to over a million people. Her parents, Natalia and Vladimir, and brother Ruslan, shared a love for sports. At the age of six, Marina took up rhythmic gymnastics, but a back injury two years later forced her to quit.
Marina’s parents then introduced her to tennis. At eight years old, she picked up a racket for the first time under the guidance of her first coach, Victoria Bucheva, in Odessa. Marina quickly fell in love with the sport and at 13, left her hometown in search of better training opportunities. She first trained in the United States before joining the Justine Hénin Academy in Namur, Belgium in the summer of 2008.
Marina began competing at the adult level shortly before her 15th birthday in 2008, playing in two tournaments. By 2009, she participated in seven tournaments, winning one in Belgium and entering the top 700 in the rankings. In 2010, she shifted her focus to adult competitions, winning a 25,000-dollar tournament in Belgium and breaking into the top 300.
Despite a decline in performance during the 2011 season, Marina bounced back in 2012, winning four ITF tournaments and making her debut in the top 200 world rankings. In 2013, she came close to breaking into the top 100, securing titles at a 25,000-dollar tournament in Moscow and a 10,000-dollar tournament. She also made her WTA debut in the second round at the category 250 championship in Linz, Austria.
In 2014, Marina ranked 134th, debuting in the main draws of Roland Garros and the US Open. She claimed two more titles at 25,000-dollar tournaments. In 2015, her ranking fluctuated, reaching a high of 118th place, and she participated in some WTA 250 tournaments.
By 2016, Marina had won the two biggest titles of her career, both 50,000-dollar tournaments in France, and finished the season ranked 127th. In 2017, she rose to the 105th position in the rankings after a victory at a 100,000-dollar tournament in Vancouver, Canada. However, her results took a downturn in the 2018 season, winning only a 60,000-dollar tournament in China and suffering from injuries.
In 2019, Marina played mostly in 25,000-dollar tournaments and experienced recurring injuries, finishing the year ranked 249th. She took a break in 2020 to address her health issues, returning to the court in August and performing well at several small ITF tournaments.
Marina began 2021 strongly, narrowly missing out on the Australian Open’s main draw and reaching the final of a 25,000-dollar tournament in France. After a series of successful performances, she rose to 81st in the world rankings by the end of the year. In 2022, Marina achieved her first major tournament victory at the Australian Open and reached a record 68th place in the rankings.
