Francisco Cerundolo Career
Born on August 13, 1998, in Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina, Francisco Cerundolo hails from a family with strong ties to tennis. His father, Alejandro “El Toto,” is a professional tennis coach who played professionally in the 1980s, achieving a singles ranking of 309. Meanwhile, Francisco’s mother, Maria Luz, is a sports psychologist, further contributing to the tennis player’s well-rounded upbringing in the world of sports.
Fran started playing tennis at the age of 5 after he was introduced to the game by his parent and trained at his father’s academy. He grew up idolising Roger Federer and Argentine Legend David Nalbandian.
He has quite successful runs in the junior championships, with a record win of 73 to 36 losses, including five wins to 1 loss in 6 Challengers finals. Overall, he won 13 Challengers and Futures tournaments.
He made his professional debut on home soil during the 2019 Argentina Open, although he became a pro in 2018. His debut was not the one he had wished for, as he lost in straight sets to Guido Pella.
The disaster was extended into 2020 as he again lost his first match in straight sets to Laslo Djere at the 2020 Argentina Open. To worsen the case, he tested positive for Covid-19 in January 2021 and could not participate in the Australian Open in the early months of the year.
Some months later, his efforts were rewarded at the 2021 Argentina Open, where he reached the finals only to lose to the World’s number 9, Diego Schwartzman. He also reached some semifinals and quarters of other tours he participated in for the first time in his career.
Importantly, despite his defeat at the finals of the 2021 Argentina Open, he walked home as the second unseeded player (qualifier) to reach an Argentina Open final after Jose Acasuso. Jose is a player who happens to be coached by his father. It is a family thing, you know.
Finally, Fran achieved his first professional career title at the 2022 Sweden Open after defeating Sebastian Baez in the tournament’s final. Notably, he eliminated the tournament’s defending champion, Casper Ruud, on his way to victory.
