Borna Coric Career
Born on November 14, 1996, in Zagreb, Croatia, Borna Coric began his tennis journey at the tender age of five. By 2013, he had established himself as a promising junior player, topping the list of the best tennis players in his age group and clinching the U.S. Junior Open title against future tour star Alexander Zverev.
As a junior, Coric also ventured onto the adult tour, making an impressive leap in the rankings by winning five consecutive Futures and making his Challenger debut in Japan. In 2013, he also made his first appearance in the ATP Zagreb qualifier and debuted in the main draw in Umag.
Coric’s momentum continued into the 2014 season, marked by his first ATP quarterfinal and his debut win at the majors (U.S. Open). In Basel, the young talent achieved the seemingly impossible, not only reaching the semifinals but also defeating Rafael Nadal, then ranked third in singles.
After rising to the top 100, Coric received the prestigious ATP Rookie of the Year award. Despite a slow start in 2015, he began to find his form, reaching the semi-finals in Dubai and defeating Andy Murray. His success continued with the third round of Roland Garros and a rise to the 33rd position in the singles rankings.
Coric’s achievements caught the attention of the Croatian federation, leading to an invitation to join the national team for the Davis Cup. In 2016, he made Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list and reached his first ATP finals in Chennai, although he ultimately fell to Stan Wawrinka. Another final in Marrakech followed, and despite the loss, Coric had a solid season, even recording another victory over Nadal.
After knee surgery in early 2017, Coric returned to the court and secured his debut ATP trophy in Marrakech. He continued to showcase his talent by defeating No. 1 ranked Andy Murray in Madrid and qualifying for the Next Generation ATP Finals, where he reached the semi-final.
2018 brought another breakthrough for Coric, as he led Croatia to the Davis Cup quarterfinals and reached his first Masters semifinals. He also claimed his second ATP trophy in Halle, defeating world No. 1 Roger Federer in the finals. By the end of the season, Coric had risen to the 12th position in the rankings and helped Croatia secure the prestigious Davis Cup trophy.
However, 2019 marked the beginning of a challenging period for the tennis player. Despite a strong start, Coric gradually lost ranking points and withdrew from Wimbledon due to a back injury. He returned to the court in the fall and reached another ATP tournament final, but ultimately lost to Daniil Medvedev.
The following season brought few significant achievements for Coric, aside from a final in St. Petersburg and a strong showing at the US Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. In May 2021, Coric announced plans for shoulder surgery, which sidelined him until March 2022. Upon his return, Coric struggled initially but soon found his form, winning the Masters in Cincinnati and defeating top players like Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
