Ashleigh Barty Career
Ashleigh Barty was born April 24, 1996, in Ipswich, Australia, the daughter of a government employee and a radiography doctor. She grew up in Springfield and attended Woodcrest State College.
Fairly early on, she became interested in sports – particularly tennis and netball. The girl’s first coach was Jim Joyce, who drew attention to the exceptional coordination and accuracy of her movements. Despite the fact that Ashley was only 5 years old, Joyce set out to teach her. He later noted: “When she turned 9, she could play on equal terms with boys who were six years older. At the age of 12, she was already practicing freely with the grown men.”
Ash is right-handed and uses a two-handed backhand on the left side. Has excellent serve and can adapt to any type of court, though she prioritizes fast grass courts. She is successful in both singles and doubles events.
Like her famous countrywoman Yvonne Goolagong-Cawley, Ashleigh is descended from Australian indigenous people on her father’s side (Ngarigo, New South Wales).
Barty debuted very early and won her first ITF junior title at the age of 13. Already then her results were staggering: taking part in five tournaments, the Australian had 24 wins and only two losses. In 2011, Ash played her first Grand Slam junior tournament at home and lost her first match. However, she wasn’t discouraged by this defeat: in summer she took part in Junior Wimbledon and won the major trophy in singles.
At the same time Barty competed on professional courts. Soon after winning Wimbledon she received a wild-card to play in the US Open qualifiers, but was not able to make it to the main draw, losing to Yulia Glushko. Nevertheless, in the end of the year she received an invitation to the Australian Open where she appeared in both singles and doubles.
In 2012 Ashleigh made her WTA Tour debut. After playing in Brisbane and Hobart, she made the switch to the ITF and soon won her first major title before finishing the season with three more.
Ash continued to progress the next season. Paired with Casey Dellacqua, she reached the Australian Open final and then Fed Cup tournaments. In Birmingham, Ashleigh and Casey could win the doubles title, but failed to do so again at Wimbledon. At the US Open, the girls again made it to the finals and lost again.
2014 brought Ashley another WTA doubles trophy, won at the Strasbourg ground courts. Despite her successes, unexpectedly, Barty announced that she was going to take a break.
Barty returned to tennis in 2016 when Craig Tizer became her coach. At first, the athlete played only in doubles, and only in May she tried her hand again in singles. Ashley reached the quarter-finals in Nottingham, but then was sidelined for a long time due to a stress fracture of her arm.

The Australian started the next season outside the top 250. She started well, making it to the third round of the Australian Open and then winning the Malaysian Singles and Doubles title. Australian Ash Barty and another unseeded player Nao Hibino reached the final. In the decisive match Ash Barty was stronger than her opponent and won, -6/3,6/2.
Despite a rather mediocre performance at the remaining Grand Slams, Barty made it to the premier finals in Wuhan in the fall and finished the season in the top 20.
2018 brought Ashleigh the WTA Nottingham title, as well as the top prize of the Zhuhai Small Final Tournament. In addition, paired with CoCo Vandeweghe, Ashley won the US Open doubles.

The next season, the Australian celebrated her first career Grand Slam singles victory (Roland Garros). In addition, she conquered the championship in Birmingham, but perhaps the most notable event of the second half of 2019 was the victory in the WTA Tour Finals, where Barty beat last year’s champion Elina Svitolina. The tennis player finished the season as world number one.
Ashleigh Barty missed most of 2020, citing the inability to maintain adequate fitness due to the lockout in Australia, as well as objective difficulties with air travel in the midst of the pandemic. The tennis player not only refused to participate in the U.S. Open, but also did not defend the majors title in France. Nevertheless, the new amendments to the WTA rules allowed her to retain the first place in the ranking at the end of the year.

Throughout the current season, Barty has been showing great results. She’s already won five tournaments and could add a few more before the end of the season. I want to highlight her first win at Wimbledon and her wins at the Masters in Maime and Cincinnati, Barty has done very well at these tournaments. Of course, there were disappointing defeats, like Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round of the Olympics in Tokyo. Barty confidently holds the lead in the WTA ranking and is the main favorite of the upcoming US Open.
