WTA Upper Austria Ladies Linz History
The first competition in Linz took place in 1987. After the division of the women’s tournaments into categories in the 1991 WTA season, Linz received the most modest gradation – fifth. Then the status of the tournament changed several times:
- In 1993, the Austrians managed to raise the level of competition to the third category.
- From 1998 till 2008 inclusively, WTA Linz had the best times in the history of the competition, because it was of the second category. The leaders of the main women’s tour came here on a regular basis.
- After the tour was restructured in 2009, the tournament was given a more modest International category (now the WTA 250).
For a long time, the tournament was called Generali Ladies Linz. Only in 2017 it was changed to the modern Upper Austria Ladies Linz. The tournament is actively supported by the government of Upper Austria.
In the 2022 season of the WTA Linz did not take place for the first time since 1987. The reason for that was that at the end of October the tour’s calendar was built around tournaments held on the American continent. Back in September 2022, the organizers of the Austrian competition received notice that the tournament would return to Linz at the beginning of the 2023 season.
