Highest ranked Ukrainian tennis player on the WTA list at the moment and former Junior Australian Open Champion playing doubles, is 25 years-old Anhelina Kalinina.

Anhelina Serhiyivna Kalinina was born on 7th February 1997 in Nova Kakhovka, Ukraine. She was introduced to tennis at the age of six by her parents, especially her mother Halyna who was coaching her in her younger age, and she really liked it.“It’s a very smart game, like chess, but you’re moving. You have to be smart and you have to be very strong” Kalinina said.

As a junior, she was selected to participate in GSDF Touring teams at under 14 and under 16 level that allowed her to test herself against the best young players in the world. She made it as high as No.8 in the World junior rankings in 2014.

“We played all the top tournaments and it really helped me because my family didn’t have the money to travel that much. In juniors you don’t make money, you’re just playing for points and experience.” she said.

Anhelina had spent much of her career playing on the ITF Circuit and made her WTA main-draw debut in 2015 at Tashkent Open, but wouldn’t play another WTA match until 2018 and her debut in a Grand Slam Tournament at US Open. Her favorite surface to play on is hard court and her favorite player is Li Na.

“I was looking up to Li Na. She was an inspiration because I liked her style and she was amazing on each surface. Li Na was my favorite.” said Kalinina in an interview.

Who Is Anhelina Kalinina’s Coach?

Anton Korchevskyi

From the beginning of 2021, Anhelina appointed Anton Korchevskyi as her new coach and they are doing a great job together.

Anton is talented former junior tennis player whose professional aspirations were curtailed following a back operation. He accompanies his wife on Tour for last two years and they have great success especially on ITF Circuit. Anhelina won five ITF titles during season 2021 and entered top 100 players on the WTA list.

Next season she won Challenger title at Lomoges Open, reached her career-high ranking of World no.34 and became the no.1 Ukranian tennis player ahead of Elina Svitolina.

“He’s doing 200% job all the time, giving it his all at all times. Our goal is to be healthy and go further, to improve my tennis as much as possible. I’m thrilled to get a chance to play all the top-tier WTA tournaments and really happy that I don’t have to play ITFs.” said Kalinina.

She had a good result at the beginning of this year Australian Open, by defeating Petra Kvitova in the second round, but eventually lost from another Czech, Barbora Krejcikova, in the third round of the tournament.

Former Kalinina’s Coaches

Vladimir Platenik

Before being coached by her husband, Kalinina was part of Empire Tennis Academy in Trnava, Slovakia, where she collaborated with former tennis player Vladimir Platenik.

Vladimir Platenik was born on 18th February 1976 in Bratislava, Slovakia. He was professional tennis player for six years and didn’t have any remarkable results. Usually was playing at Futures and managed to win one singles and four doubles titles.

After retirement in 2000, he started coaching, has a PTCA certification and is currently a head coach at the international Empire Tennis Academy. Also, he is the vice president of the Professional Tennis Coaches Association for Slavic countries. Vladimir coached many players on the WTA Tour, such as Dominika Cibulkova, Belinda Bencic, Ajla Tomljanovic and Daria Kasatkina. Now he is coach of Veronika Kudermetova.

Since the beginning of season 2018 he started mentoring Kalinina, they won together four ITF Circuit titles and she managed to make her main-draw debut in a Grand Slam singles tournament at 2018 US Open, after winning three matches in the qualifying.

“The reason I have decided to work with Anhelina is that I know her little bit. And I want to train somebody who is independent, mature, but is still out of elite players. In that group the players are no willing to make so many changes in their game. Kalinina was great junior player, but unfortunately, she was injured after that period. I think if she will be working year or more here in Trnava, she will have a chance to work on the right things which I would like to teach her and she will be able to reach Top 100.” said her coach Platenik.

Dinara Safina

From the start of season 2017, Kalinina was coached by former World no.1 WTA tennis player, Dinara Safina.
Dinara Mubinova Safina (36) was born on 27th April 1986 in Moscow, Russia. Her father Mubin is director of the tennis club Spartak in Moscow and her mother Rauza was her trainer when she was younger.

Her brother is former World no.1 Marat Safin. She turned pro in 2000 and her last match was in 2011. During that period Dinara won 12 titles in singles and 9 titles in doubles, including the 2007 US Open, and reached World no.1 in 2009.

After retirement she has battled depression and feelings of loneliness when faced the lack of competitive thrill and a sudden drop in popularity.

Then she went back to school in Moscow and earned a degree in law. For two years she was the director of operations for an IT company in Moscow, going into an office every day and she hated it. Shortly came the opportunity to coach at Match Point sports ceneter in New York, which she immediately accepted.

As for the time with Kalinina, they worked together for one year, a period in which Anhelina won four ITF Circuit titles. That meant a lot for the Ukrainian and her confidence, having in mind that the previous season she suffered a shoulder injury and has played just a handful of matches.

“It’s a big challenge for me, I think I can help her. She reminds me so much of me when I was young. The way she answers to me is exactly the same way I answered to my coach. She is tall and for me she has a big potential.” said Dinara about her trainee at the beginning of their collaboration.

Dmitry Mazur

In her junior years, Kalinina was coached by former tennis player, Dmitry Mazur.
Dmitry Mazur (43) was born on 8th September 1979 in Ukraine. He didn’t have any success while playing tennis and then turned to coaching. He led Anhelina to four ITF Circuit titles, one Challenger, but the most significant of all is that she managed to win 2014 Junior Australian Open playing in doubles alongside Elizaveta Kulichkova.
