Renowned for his hot temper and bad boy behavior on the court, often arguing with umpires, spectators, and opponents, player that has received more fines for his temperamental on-court controversial actions than any other player in ATP history is Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios.
Nicholas Hilmy Kyrgios was born on 27th April 1995 in Canberra, Australia. He started playing tennis when he was seven and also played basketball in his early teens, before deciding to focus solely on tennis when he was fourteen years old. He received a full scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport, where he was able to further develop in tennis. Nick played his first junior match at age of 13 and won his first ITF junior tour title in Fiji, aged 15. At Junior Grand Slams he won three titles in doubles and one singles title. He turned pro in 2013 and his tennis idols are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils. Another controversy related to him is that he is one of the top-level tennis players on the ATP Tour who doesn’t have a coach.
“I should be nominated in the coach of the year category, I coached myself to a Wimbledon final” – Kyrgios wrote on Twitter a few weeks ago.
Who Are Nick Kyrgios’ Parents?
Nick Kyrgios comes from a multi-ethnic background. He is third born and youngest child of Giorgos and Norlaila Kyrgios. His father Giorgos is from Greece while his mother Norlaila ‘Nill’ was born in Gombak, a district in Selangor, Malaysia. Giorgos at a young age also played tennis, but not in a high level. Now he is a self-employed house painter. Interestingly, Norlaila comes from the Selangor royal family in Malaysia, which is the family of the Sultan of Selangor. She even had the title Tengku of Pahang, or princess of the Pahang state.
“Nick is very close to his Malaysian family, whom he has visited many times. He even played tennis at Cameron Highlands the last time we were in Malaysia. The entire Kyrgios family is very close to my family.” said Norlaila.
However, when she came to Australia in her 20s with her mother, she dropped the title. Nill studied engineering and become a computer engineer.
The couple met in Australia and on 15th April 1988 got married. This year she posted a photo of their wedding, celebrating their 34 anniversary “Then and now…34 years later. Love is a precious thing.” Nill wrote. Having been married for over three decades and counting, they are deemed a perfect couple as there have not been records of any controversy.
Although Nick’s father can be seen in the stands at almost all the tournaments he plays in, the absence of his mother can also be noticed. That is because she is suffering from kidney failure and heart-related issues and watching Kyrgios play makes her very nervous. In a past interview with ABC Australia Nill said, “I don’t watch Nick play. I’m just too nervous. I get too scared. I’m just hopeless – I tend to hide.”
Her heart condition is quite serious and it even led to some controversy from Kyrgios’ end before the Australian Open in 2021. Kyrgios had argued at that time for the cancelation of the tournament to avoid the possibility of a COVID outbreak.
“It’s not about me. My mum is incredibly sick. There’s too much risk in all of this. I don’t understand what’s so hard for tennis players to understand. Like, you’re just a tennis player. Do you know what I mean? It’s not life and death like this is.” said Nick.
The same year Kyrgios has revealed his mother was also battling failing kidneys and is set to receive a kidney from husband Giorgos, provided the pair are compatible. However, there is no information if the transplantation happened at all.
This year at US Open, after a momentous comeback win over Daniil Medvedev, Nick signed a message to his sick mum on a TV camera, writing: “Be strong Ma“.
“It’s hard because even travelling now, my mum is in hospital at the moment, my dad hasn’t been very well, my brother just had a baby and I don’t get to be there with my family when normal people would like to be with them” Kyrgios said
“It’s hard being from Australia because we can’t travel back and forth. There’s a lot of things people don’t see. They only see me winning, losing, throwing a racquet, doing those things. They don’t really understand the challenges that I face or what people on tour face, what’s going on in their personal lives.“
After finishing his US Open journey in the quarterfinals, Kyrgios wrote on his Instagram story “No Laver Cup for me this year!!! Just letting you all know. Gotta have that home time with my family and beautiful girlfriend.”
