Victoria Azarenka may become the record holder of the Indian Wells tournament in terms of women’s singles titles. Now the Belarusian tennis player has two titles won in 2012 and 2016. The same number of titles have 8 other female tennis players, of which only Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters have not yet finished their careers.
I’m fighting to the end
Azarenka recently reached the final of the competition by defeating, Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinals of the Indian Wells tournament 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
“She started scoring winners and I had to run around like a rabbit and try to drag. I had to somehow turn the match around and take the lead because she was playing really well, deep and wouldn’t let me get into the game. But I fight to the end,” Azarenka said after the match.

In the final, two-time Indian Wells winner Victoria Azarenka will play Spain’s Paula Badosa, who defeated Ons Jaber in the other semifinal match.
I’ve never played with Paula and I’ve never trained with her. It will be a new challenge, I will have to understand the tennis she plays, I’ll try to adjust,” Victoria said.
Victoria Azarenka told Tennis Head how she feels about the WTA-1000 tournament in Indian Wells:
“I’ve always liked playing in big tournaments. Indian Wells is almost my fifth Grand Slam tournament. My motivation is much higher at tournaments like that. However, when you come here every year, you start to take it for granted. In two and a half years of absence I had forgotten how beautiful and pleasant it is to play here. However, in terms of playing, the conditions here are quite challenging. We’ve been playing here for two weeks, so you need to stay concentrated and have energy,” – Azarenka said.
Challenging season
This season Victoria Azarenka is not showing her former results. This year for the first time she made it to the finals. She’s only twice reached the semifinals this season: in Doha and Berlin. The Belarusian commented on her successes of the current season to the tour press service.
“It’s a difficult season for me. Sometimes I wasn’t able to add physically, to compete more, and it was very frustrating. I didn’t understand what I was missing, so this season I’ve spent a lot of time searching for my game,” Azarenka said.
