Lorenzo Musetti’s Career
Lorenzo Musetti was born on March 3, 2002 in Carrara, Italy. He is one of the most promising talents of his generation.
Muzetti managed to make a name for himself while still a junior. The young tennis player’s most resounding success was winning a singles title at the 2019 Australian Open, where he beat Emilio Nava of the United States in the final. A few months later, Lorenzo topped the junior rankings.
The Italian did not delay with his ATP debut: already in 2020, he took the court for the first time in Dubai, where he successfully overcame the qualifying stage, consistently defeating Alexei Popirin (Australia) and Evgeny Donskoy (Russia). Unfortunately for the newcomer, he was paired in the first round with the top-seeded Andrey Rublev, whom he lost 4-6, 4-6 without a chance.
Lorenzo had his next chance to compete on tour after the season resumed in August. After competing in several Challenger events, he qualifies for his home Masters in Rome. Despite not being expected to do much, Musetti surprised his fans by defeating the respected Swiss Grandmaster Stan Wawrinka in the first round. Overall, the draw was more than successful for the Italian, who had beaten Kei Nishikori of Japan in the second round and moved one step forward, which was seen as a clear success.
Just a week later, inspired by his first serious achievement, Lorenzo won his debut Challenger in Forlì, Italy. In mid-October, he takes the ATP event by storm again, this time in Sardinia, where he reaches his first career semi-final, where he loses to Laszlo Jere of Serbia.
Despite the fact that Lorenzo has not yet been able to prove himself in the majors, his confident and steady play helped him break into the top 100 the next season. The real breakthrough for the Italian tennis player was the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco. After qualifying Lorenzo knocked out Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman in the first round and then overcame several top-seeded players to reach the semifinals before losing to eventual finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas. All that had the most positive effect on Muzetti’s position in the rankings: on March 22, 2021 he entered the elite hundred, becoming the ninth representative of Italy in the prestigious list.
Current Season
Following his success in 2021, he participated in several top tournaments where he made significant progress, 2022 Madrid Open, and the 2022 Hamburg Open. He eventually won his first and only career professional title at the 2022 Hamburg Open (ATP 500 series).
He currently sits at number 30 in the world Singles Ranking and 537 under the Doubles category. However, considering his potential, he might be up in the coming months.
