Libema Open: History Of The Competition
The Libema Open, held in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, is a vibrant tennis tournament that features both men’s and women’s competitions. However, the women’s tournament, a part of the WTA, has a shorter history, starting only in 1996, six years after the men’s debut in 1990. Over 25 years, the tournament’s name has changed frequently based on sponsorships:
- It started as the Wilkinson Championships in its debut year.
- Between 1997 and 2001, it was known as the Heineken Trophy.
- From 2002 to 2009, it was the Ordina Open.
- Between 2010 and 2012, it took the name UNICEF Open.
- From 2013 to 2015, it was called the Topshelf Open.
- The event was known as the Ricoh Open in 2016 and 2017.
- Since 2018, it has been called the Libema Open.
Libema is one of the largest Dutch leisure companies, which operates theme parks, leisure parks, and temporary fairs. One of these parks, the Brabanthallen park, is located in Hertogenbosch. The tournament is held at the Autotron convention center, where the grass courts are meticulously prepared from mid-Spring.
The tournament has two associated cities, Hertogenbosch and Rosmalen. Hertogenbosch is a large city and the administrative center of the province of North Brabant. Rosmalen, on the other hand, is a part of Hertogenbosch and the location of the tournament.
However, the tournament had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though the organizers were prepared in 2021, the rescheduling of Roland Garros by a week led to its cancellation.
The tournament has been attracting top tennis players since 1990. At its inception, it was the only championship held on grass courts in continental Europe. This event is often referred to by players as the Championship of Rosmalen, a smaller town that is part of Hertogenbosch.
The men’s tournament has also seen various name changes, similar to the women’s:
- From 1994 to 2009, it was known as the Ordina Open.
- From 2010 to 2012, it was the UNICEF Open.
- It was the Topshelf Open from 2013 to 2015.
- In 2016 and 2017, it was the Ricoh Open.
- Since 2018, it has been the Libema Open.
Both men’s and women’s matches have been held at the Autotron convention center since 1996. The tournament’s location is quite accessible, being only 80 km from Amsterdam and near major train junctions and highways.
