American tennis player Frances Tiafoe for the fifth time will try to win the main trophy at the ATP competition in Washington. In the previous editions of this tournament, Frances’ best result was the third round of the competition. He reached that stage in 2018 and 2019. In 2018 he was stopped by Belgian David Goffin, in 2019 Russian Daniil Medvedev beat Tiafoe in two sets.
Nadal’s participation in the City Open
Before the tournament began, Frances gave a short interview in which he talked about Nadal’s participation in this City Open.
“It’s just unbelievable that Nadal came here to D.C. Having a player of his caliber here is pretty legendary. It’s a big tournament. It’s a great opportunity for guys in the county to see professional players. I come here and I see del Potro win here, I see James Blake, Lleyton Hewitt, all these guys that come and perform here. You’re like, “Wow, I might be able to play with these guys someday, even be in the same locker room with them.” I think that experience definitely helped me become the person I am today. I love that this tournament is here, and I hope it continues to be here for years to come.”
Frances Tiafoe will begin his path to the trophy in Washington with a match against his compatriot Jenson Brooksby, who knocked out Kevin Anderson in the first round, thus avenging the South African’s loss in the final of the tournament in Newport. Frances has never played against Jenson, we hope that the athletes will show spectacular tennis.
Top 10 Guy
Frances, who gained more confidence after defeating top-10 ATP player Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon, commented to the tournament press service on his ranking expectations.
“I think if I can keep more consistent weeks back-to-back, I’ll be alright. It’s not really about getting back to 29 in the world. I see myself as a top-15, top-10 guy. It’s not really getting back to 29. I know I can do that. Being at the top of the game is what I’m approaching.”- said Frances.
