WTA Charleston Open: History Of The Competition
This American tournament has a rich history, having been held since 1973. However, the championship was originally held in other cities in South Carolina:
- Two debut draws were held in Hilton Head Island.
- In 1975 and 1976, the event was hosted by Amelia Island.
- Then the competition returned to Hilton Head Island until and including the 2000 season.
- Since 2001, the tournament has been held permanently in Charleston, South Carolina.
At the end of the 20th century, the organizers of the WTA Charleston introduced a prize pool of $100,000 for players, the highest at the time among WTA base category events. Over time, the category of the competition changed:
- In 1988, they received a second category.
- In 1990, the status of the competition increased, they were among the nine largest at the WTA level.
- In 2009, after the restructuring of the Tour, WTA Charleston was promoted to the Premier category (WTA 500 as of the 2021 season).
The only interruption to the competition occurred in 2020, when it was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Currently, the Credit One Charleston Open is the only tournament on the women’s tour that takes place on green clay. It got its current name thanks to the support of its sponsor – the financial company Credit One Bank. From 2016 to 2021, the tournament was called the Volvo Car Open in honor of the famous car company.
