ATP & WTA Miami Open: Players And Prize Money For 2023 Event Announced

The Miami Open tennis tournament also known as Miami Open presented by Itau for sponsorship reasons is a professional tournament and part of the ATP 1000 and WTA 1000 events on the ATP and WTA tour that will take place on the hard courts of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, United States.

The sports complex has 27 courts – 10 competition courts and 17 training courts.

The Stadium court and the Grandstand are the two main competition arenas. The first has a capacity of 14,000 spectators, the second has a capacity of 5,000 spectators.

The 2023 Miami Open is the 38th edition of the tournament for men and women. It will take place from March 22 to April 2.

ATP & WTA Miami Open Prize Money

The prize money purse at the  Miami Open presented by Itau has seen a small increase for the 2023 tennis season. The total prize money came to – $17,600,000, up 2.52% from 2022. 

The Miami Open has been offering the same prize money to both male and female competitors in the singles and doubles competitions, amounting to a total of $8,800,000 in 2023 shared between the two tours.

The champion in Miami will receive just over 14% of that total $1,262,220 if he wins the trophy. The runner-up will receive a healthy payout, pocketing $662,360 for her efforts. There is a significant drop off in prize money after the semi-final stage, with the two losing players in that round taking home $352,635 each. Those eliminated in the quarter-finals will receive $184,465 for their efforts. First-round losers will walk away with $18,660.

ATP Miami Open Entry List Will Be Headed By Carlos Alcaraz

The event will feature the participation of notable figures of American tennis such as Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, John Isner, J.J. Wolf, Ben Shelton and Maxime Cressy among others.

In singles, the trophy will be contested by 96 athletes, while 32 will take part in the doubles event. The top seeds are the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The last event in 2022 was won by Carlos Alcaraz, beating Casper Ruud in the final. A Spanish tennis player, Carlos Alcaraz, will defend his title this year.

WTA Miami Open Entry List Will Be Headed By Iga Swiatek

The event will feature the participation of notable figures of American tennis such as Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, and Amanda Anisimova among others.

In singles, the trophy will be contested by 96 athletes, while 32 will take part in the doubles event. The top seeds are the Pole Iga Swiatek and Belorussian Aryna Sabalenka.

The last event in 2022 was won by Iga Swiatek, beating Naomi Osaka in the final. A Polish tennis player, Iga Swiatek, will defend her title this year.

ATP & WTA Miami Open: History Of The Competition

The tournament was first held in 1985 and was initially a men’s-only event known as the Lipton International Players Championships. It was held at the Delray Beach Tennis Center in Delray Beach, Florida.

In 1987, the tournament moved to its current home, the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida. The following year, the competition was renamed the Miami Masters and became a combined men’s and women’s event. It was also upgraded to Super 9 status, which was the highest level of ATP Tour events at the time.

In 2000, the tournament was renamed the Ericsson Open after securing a new title sponsor. It was upgraded again to ATP Masters Series status, which was the highest level of ATP Tour events at that time. In 2002, the event was renamed the NASDAQ-100 Open after NASDAQ became its new title sponsor. The tournament continued to be a combined men’s and women’s event.

In 2007, the event was renamed the Sony Ericsson Open after Sony and Ericsson merged. The event was rebranded again in 2013, this time as the Sony Open Tennis after Sony became the sole title sponsor. The event was renamed again in 2015, this time as the Miami Open presented by Itaú after securing a new title sponsor.

In 2018, the Miami Open was acquired by IMG, a global sports and entertainment company. The event was also upgraded to ATP Tour Masters 1000 status, which is the highest level of ATP Tour events after the Grand Slams. The following year, in 2019, the tournament was renamed the Miami Open presented by Itaú and relocated to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The stadium is the home of the Miami Dolphins NFL team.
