ATP Rio Open: History Of The Competition
The predecessor of the modern ATP Rio de Janeiro was the Banespa Open, first held in 1989. The following season the competition was given the ATP category. However, the organizers soon ran into financial difficulties, so the championship was put on a long pause.
The ATP Rio de Janeiro was resumed under a new license in 2014, when the San Jose and Memphis stages lost their licenses. Since then, it has been held annually on the dirt courts of the Jockey Club Brasileiro, a sports complex that was built in the 20th century. The exception was the 2021 season, when tennis players did not come to Brazil due to changes in the calendar due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Rio Open is considered a very prestigious stage of the winter Latin American series on the ground: Rafael Nadal, in particular, participated in it in 2014 and took the top prize.
