The Terra Wortmann Open, also known as the Halle Open, is a prominent ATP 500 tennis tournament set to be held on the grass courts of the OWL Arena in Halle, Germany.

The OWL Arena, previously known as the Gerry Weber Stadion, is a versatile indoor sports complex situated in Halle, a city in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. Built in 1993, the arena can accommodate up to 12,300 spectators. One of the unique features of this arena is its retractable roof, which can be shut in just 88 seconds, ensuring tennis matches can go on uninterrupted, even in the rain. The heated stadium is not only a host to tennis but also caters to various other sports like handball, basketball, volleyball, and boxing, and is a popular venue for TV shows and concerts. It’s one of the rare arenas that feature a grass court for tennis.

In 2020, the stadium saw a change in ownership when 13 sponsors acquired the venue, leading to its renaming as the OWL Arena.

ATP Halle Open Prize Money

Halle Open Entry List Will Be Headed By Daniil Medvedev

Terra Wortmann Open: History Of The Competition

Since 1993, tennis players have been participating in the Halle Open tournament. Initially, it was an ATP 250 event until 2014, when it was elevated to an ATP 500 tournament. The event has seen changes in its name over the years due to different sponsorships:

• From 1993 to 2018, the tournament was named the Gerry Weber Open, named after the founder Gerhard Weber. He was a famous fashion manufacturer and retailer in his home country. Even though financial support from Weber ended in 2008 due to financial difficulties, the organizers maintained his name in the title.
• From 2019 to 2021, the championship was known as the Noventi Open, sponsored by the software development company, Noventi, based in Munich.
• Starting from 2022, the tournament got a new name, the Terra Wortmann Open, after its sponsor, Wortmann AG, a German company known for assembling and selling digital electronics, mainly computers.

In 2000, the ATP Halle tournament was recognized as the best in the ATP International Series, now known as ATP 250.

Roger Federer is the record-holder at the Halle Open, having won the title 10 times, matching his victories in Basel, his home tournament. His first victory in Germany was in 2003, and the most recent one was in 2019. Notably, Federer faced Russian players twice in the final matches:

• Federer bagged his first four titles consecutively, starting in 2003. He emerged victorious against German Nicolas Kiefer in 2003 and American Mardy Fish in 2004. In 2005, he had a tough match against Marat Safin, and in 2006, he won against Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic.
• His fifth title came in 2008 when he outperformed Philipp Kohlschreiber, a local player.
• In 2013, he faced Russia’s Mikhail Yuzhny and won the match despite losing the first set. He added two more titles to his name in 2014 and 2015.
• In 2017, Federer bested Germany’s Alexander Zverev, and in 2019, he won against Belgium’s David Goffin.

However, Federer was defeated three times in the Halle Open finals. In 2010, he lost to Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, in 2012 to Germany’s Tommy Haas, and in 2018 to Croatia’s Borna Ćorić. Interestingly, one of the streets in Halle is named after Roger Federer.
