Viсtoria Azarenka Career
Victoria Azarenka, born on July 31, 1989, in Minsk, Belarus, began her journey towards becoming a tennis professional under the guidance of her mother, who was involved with the Olympic Training Center for Tennis. Initiated into the sport at age 7, she honed her skills under various coaches and began training more consistently overseas by the time she was 15, receiving substantial support from the family of Russian hockey player, Nikolai Khabibulin.
Azarenka’s potential became evident early on as she showcased remarkable prowess in junior international tournaments. She won her first title at a third-category tournament in Uzbekistan just before turning 14 and secured victories in first-category competitions by the time she was 15. By 16, she was the world’s top-ranked junior player, having won prestigious titles like the Australian Open and the U.S. Open.
The Belarusian made her professional debut at 14 and broke into the top-500 of the world ranking in 2004. Her performance in the 2005 season was particularly noteworthy as she not only excelled in junior competitions but also made her mark in adult tournaments. She debuted in the Fed Cup (now the Billie Jean King Cup) and won her first 25-thousandth title, climbing to the top 150 in world rankings. By 2006, Azarenka was competing in major tournaments and finished the year ranked 92nd globally.
She continued to progress swiftly, reaching the third round of the US Open in 2006 and nearly securing her first WTA title in 2007. In the 2008 season, her consistent performances in major tournaments propelled her to No.14 in the world rankings.
By 2009, Azarenka had established herself among the tennis elite. Despite facing injuries and career interruptions, she managed to secure her debut title at the WTA 250 in Brisbane, Australia. Her career highlight came in 2012 when she enjoyed a winning streak of 26 matches, which included securing the Australian Open title and leading the world rankings. Her success continued into 2013 when she defended her title at the Australian Open and won two major tournaments.
However, health issues sidelined Azarenka in 2014, causing her world ranking to slip. Despite her attempts to regain form, she finished the 2015 season without any titles and was ranked only 22nd globally.
2016 marked a comeback for Azarenka, winning the WTA 500 in Brisbane and securing victories in Indian Wells and Miami. However, her performance was hampered by health issues again, and she announced her pregnancy during the summer.
Post-pregnancy, Azarenka returned to the court in 2017 and quickly regained form, reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon. However, a custody dispute with her child’s father affected her comeback plans. She made another attempt to return to the sport in 2018 and managed to reach the semifinals of the WTA 1000 in Miami, ending the season ranked 51 globally.
Despite her inconsistent performance in 2019, Azarenka found her stride post-quarantine in 2020, winning the WTA 1000 in New York and making it to the major finals at the US Open after a seven-year gap.
In 2021, despite health challenges, Azarenka managed to reach the finals of the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells but couldn’t maintain her position in the top-20 rankings due to her performance at the Grand Slam tournaments. She continued to compete at a similar level in 2022, finishing the year in the third ten of the rankings.
