Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the rising Argentine tennis star born on July 18, 1999, in La Plata, Argentina, has been making waves in the world of tennis with his impressive performances in recent tournaments. With a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 59 achieved on April 10, 2023, and a doubles ranking of World No. 205, Etcheverry has come a long way since his first introduction to the sport at the tender age of five. It all began during the hot summer afternoons on the sandy beaches of Cariló, where young Tomás would spend hours playing with an orbital tennis shoe gifted to him by his family. His passion for tennis only grew stronger as he participated in his first tournament at the age of seven, competing in the Platense Tennis Association.
The young prodigy’s journey from his humble beginnings to his current success has been greatly influenced by the guidance and support of two important figures in his life: his current coach, Carlos Berlocq, and his junior coach, Gustavo Merbilhaa.
Who Is Tomas Martin Etcheverry’s Current Coach?
Carlos Berlocq
Carlos Berlocq, a former professional tennis player himself, began coaching Etcheverry at the beginning of 2021. With a career-high singles ranking of World No. 37, Berlocq has been instrumental in refining Etcheverry’s technique and strategy on the court. Berlocq has praised his protégé for his powerful and precise forehand, versatile backhand, and impressive serve, as well as his commitment to the sport.
Under Berlocq’s tutelage, Etcheverry has had a successful 2023 season so far. In the Santiago tournament, he reached the finals against Nicolás Jarry, narrowly losing 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-2. His path to the finals included victories over top-ranked players such as Sebastián Báez, Dusan Lajovic, and Francisco Cerundolo. Etcheverry’s strong performance continued in the Houston tournament, where he reached the finals against Frances Tiafoe, losing a close match 7-6(1), 7-6(6). Earlier in the tournament, he defeated challenging opponents Yannick Hanfmann and Cristian Garin.
Carlos Alberto Berlocq, born February 3, 1983, is an Argentine retired professional tennis player who went by the nicknames Charly, Panther, and Warlocq. With a preference for playing on clay courts, Berlocq was coached by Walter Grinovero during his own career.
Gustavo Merbilhaa
Before his work with Carlos Berlocq, Etcheverry’s foundational skills were honed by Gustavo Merbilhaa, who began coaching him at the age of seven. Merbilhaa was immediately impressed by the young Etcheverry’s ability to consistently land his shots even without proper technique. Despite only training for one hour twice a week, Etcheverry’s dedication to the sport was evident. As Merbilhaa recalled, “He was capable of sacrificing a victory in order to do what he had to do and improve.”
Merbilhaa also helped Etcheverry address issues with anxiety and pressure that plagued him during his early years. With the support of a sports psychologist and a psychiatrist, Etcheverry was able to overcome these challenges and develop a strong mental game that has greatly contributed to his success on the court.
