WTA Qatar TotalEnergies Open: History Of The Competition
Players have been coming to the WTA Doha since 2001. The regular tournament was not held only in 2009 and 2010, which was due to the fact that the Qatari capital hosted the Final Championships. In the 2008 season, Doha hosted both the regulars in February and the WTA Finals.
WTA Doha has had a high ranking almost throughout the entire time it has been held:
- For the first three years, the third category tournaments were held here. Then there were still lower category championships – fourth and fifth. Now all are combined into the WTA 250 series.
- From 2004 to 2007, players came to the second category tournament (now the WTA 500).
- In the 2008 season, the event first received the first category (now WTA 1000).
- In 2011, the event resumed in the Qatari capital as Premier (WTA 500). Then for three consecutive seasons, players came to the Premier 5 event (WTA 1000).
- In 2015, the organizers of the WTA Doha and the tournament in Dubai agreed to swap tournament categories every year. Thus, in odd-numbered years the 500 category championships are held in the Qatari capital, and in even-numbered years the 1000 category.
The Doha tournament is officially called the Qatar TotalEnergies Open. TotalEnergies is a company in Qatar that deals with solar energy and natural gas projects. This sponsor has been supporting the event since 2021.
