The winner of the bronze medal at the Olympics in Tokyo, Elina Svitolina, did not take part in tournaments after beating Elena Rybakina. Despite this, the Ukrainian has been in the top 10 of the WTA rankings for 200 weeks.
A boost of energy at the Olympics
Svitolina shared her emotions from winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
“It was a stressful July for me, there were a lot of great memories and events.
It’s amazing to win such a big battle for the bronze medal of the Games. Everyone in Ukraine is watching and cheering, so this award is especially valuable to me. Especially considering the fact that we don’t win that many medals.
My goal at the Olympics was to win the gold, so it was hard for me to play in the semi-finals. Then after the loss I had to readjust and go out again in the bronze medal match against a strong tennis player who plays really well.
It’s amazing to experience everything in such a short amount of time, but I’m very happy.” -said Elina.
The new challenge in Montreal
The Ukrainian tennis player is the third seed in the WTA-1000 tournament in Montreal. Her first match will be on August 11 against the winner of the pair Zhang Shuai-Johanna Konta.
I’m looking forward to the tournament in Montreal. I won the Toronto tournament in 2017 and then I got to the semifinals in Montreal the next year. Those were very memorable tournaments for me, because the grid was full of strong competitors. But I still have very warm feelings about going back to Canada,”- Svitolina said.
