Wimbledon quarterfinalist, Ajla Tomljanovic continues her performance at the San Jose tournament. In the first round, the Australian knocked out American Amanda Anisimova, -1/6.7/5.7/5. Ajla was trailing 3-5 in the second set and saved a match point and then saved another in the third set.
Never give up
Former WTA No. 39 Ayla Tomljanovic commented on her reaching the second round at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic.
It was really like she didn’t notice me on the court in the first set. I wasn’t ready for so many hard balls, even after a few good serves. I just knew that in the second set I had to keep her out of the lead,” Tomljanovic said in her on-court interview.
“I was lucky to come back from a few match balls. Amanda showed great tennis at times. I’m happy I got through.”
“I managed to stay mentally resilient. I didn’t give up even when I was losing 1-6, 3-5, and I definitely found ways to win today. Even though I wasn’t feeling my best in the first set, I knew I just had to find my opportunities to hit and take them.
In the next round of competition in San Jose, the Australian will play Yulia Putintseva, who recently won the competition in Budapest. Putintseva leads in the head-to-head match 2-1.
