Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios could not make it to the second round of the ATP tournament in Washington. At the start of the competition, he lost to U.S. player Mackenzie McDonald 4-6, 4-6.
McDonald will face No. 13-seeded Benoit Paire of France to advance to the third round of the ATP 500 tournament. The top seed is Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
Nick Kyrgios failed to defend the title, he won in Washington in 2019. Last season, these competitions did not take place because of the coronavirus pandemic.
A Good Opponent
Nick Kyrios commented on his loss in the first round of the tournament in Washington.
“McDonald played well, played well, made important plays. He should be proud. He’s a good player and also a great guy.
Of course, I’m disappointed. I never want to lose. I’m a fighter. But today I didn’t feel the usual pressure. It felt like I wasn’t experiencing my usual emotions on the court at all. I feel like I liked my tennis better when it was experiencing ups and downs. As you can see, today, after losing, I’m barely starting to get angry. I do miss the days when I lost, but I kept fighting, I got penalized, I dropped my racquets.
It just meant that I cared about the outcome. I cared about what was going on. Now I’m losing and I’m happy for my opponent. Before, I couldn’t stand my opponents. Now … I don’t know, I don’t know … I always had a theory that if people get mad when they lose, they care. Now I don’t know. It’s all very strange,” the Australian said at a press conference.
