Kevin Anderson Career
Kevin Anderson was born on May 18, 1986 in Johannesburg, South Africa. His parents instilled in him and his brother Gregory a love of sports from an early age. Both boys trained so hard and performed so convincingly for their age that the family decided to move to the United States where they could get a full education while working with the best coaches.
More goal-oriented and active Kevin started his professional carrier in the University of Illinois, where he alternated between athletics and tennis. He made his debut on world courts in 2004. Interestingly, his first Futures Series tournament (Gaborone, Botswana) brought Kevin the title, which is rare for a young tennis player.
Nevertheless, the young athlete progressed slowly. He did not win his debut Challenger trophy until three seasons later, but in 2008 for the first time in his career he was able to qualify for the majors (Australia), and then reached the ATP tournament finals in Las Vegas. Despite failing to win the trophy, Kevin is climbing up into the top 100. The same year he tries his hand at the Olympics for the first time, but gets stopped in the second round.
First ATP Trophy
Kevin Anderson wins his first Grand Slam bout in 2009 and keeps showing good results on Challenger level, but the high score comes in 2011, when Anderson wins his first ATP trophy in Johannesburg. Gradually improving his stats, the South African made it to the semi-finals in Vienna and into the top 40.
In 2012 Kevin won his second ATP title (Delray Beach). His main rival in this period was Tomas Berdych to whom the South African lost time and again (Australian Open, Wimbledon, Masters at Indian Wells). Nevertheless, steady progress soon allowed Anderson to enter the top 20.
In the 2014-2017 seasons, Kevin purposefully improved his game, going further and further down the Grand Slam tournament circuit time after time. After missing much of 2016 and early 2017 due to injury, the South African sagged noticeably in the rankings, so he returned to the court super-motivated. The result was not long in coming: in August he reached the finals of the US Open for the first time, beating such opponents as Borna Coric, Sam Querrey and Pablo Carreno Busta. A year later Kevin repeated his achievement, this time at Wimbledon. His opponent was more serious: on his way to the final he defeated Gael Monfils and Roger Federer, but lost the title fight to Novak Djokovic 2-6, 2-6, 6-7 (3).

Anderson soon climbs to a record fifth singles ranking. At the end of the year he takes part for the first time in the ATP Finals, where he makes it to the semi-finals.
Thereafter, Anderson’s results began to decline. Already in the following season, he drops out of Wimbledon in the third round and ends the year with just one title, narrowly missing out on the top 100.
In 2020, because of the pandemic, Anderson was unable to gain good form and win at least one trophy.
