Maria Sakkari is a professional female tennis player who hails from Athens in Greece and currently sits at number 3 in the world, a position she has maintained since July 17, 2022. Sakkari was born on the 25th of July 1995 to the family of Konstantinos Sakkaris and Angelikí Kanellopoúlou. Her mother, Angeliki, was also a Greek tennis player and represented the nation many times at the Fed Cup and made the top 50 in the world before she retired.
Maria was introduced to the game at six by her parents and continued training under their watch till she was 18, and left for Barcelona for further development. She turned pro two years after she got to Barcelona in 2015 and has maintained her consistency to achieve the World number 3 position.
She has won just one career title at the 2019 Morocco Open in Rabat, although she has participated in several final matches in top tournaments. Her team performance is not so impressive; she currently sits at number 518 in the World’s Doubles Category and has a career highest ranking of 169.
Who Is The Current Coach Of Maria Sakkari?
Tom Hills
The current coach of Maria Sakkari is Tom Hills. Maria and Tom have been together for almost four years since their relationship dates back to 2018. Tom is a young American coach who played tennis for some time before becoming a full-time coach. He currently works with both Danniele Collins and Maria Sakkari at WTA Tours.
Tom strongly believes Maria is a world-class player and has what it takes to be the World’s number 1. He made this known during an interview in 2021 when he was recorded: “I know Maria can become the best player in the world. I know it. Who is number one? Barty? Maria has already beaten her.
Osaka? Maria has already beaten her. Kvitova? Maria has already beaten her. There’s no one she can’t beat, so why not be the best? She must become a little more arrogant and think she is the best. It’s possible, believe me”. He seems correct as Maria has since become the World’s number 3 some months later.
Under the watch of Tom, Maria has been able to record her first and only career title, which was won during the 2019 Morocco Open in Rabat, and they look forward to adding more titles to her cabinet soon. Mari has also improved a lot under the guidance of Tom and has become one of the best female tennis players in the world at the moment.

Previous Coaches Of Maria Sakkari
Thomas Johansson
Thomas was Maria’s first recognized professional coach and took charge of her in 2017, although the relationship lasted a year barely. Thomas was also David Goffin’s coach before Maria. David Goffin is an ex-Swedish professional male tennis player who marched the court for 15 years between 1994 and 2009.
He was quite successful and won 10 career titles, including 9 Singles titles and 1 Doubles title. On the international level, he was also phenomenal as he won the 1998 Davis Cup with the Swedish team and achieved a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing.
Thomas and Maria did not record any title during her relationship, and the reason for their split up was unknown. The best guess is the poor run of Maria towards the end of the 2018 season, which saw her almost fall out of the top 50 in the world. Upon their split up, Thomas went on to work with Filip Krajinović for a year before reuniting with David Goffin towards the end of 2019.
Mark Petchey
Maria also worked with Mark Petchey for a short while after she split up with Thomas in 2018. Mark is an ex-English professional tennis player who reached a career highest ranking of 80 during his playing days and won just one Doubles title throughout his career at the 1996 Nottingham Open.
Before working with Maria, Mark has worked with former World Number 1, Andy Murray, whom he guided to the Top 50; Silvija Talaja, whom he guided to the World’s Top 20; and Tina Pisnik, whom he guided to the World’s Top 30. He also served as a tennis commentator and analyst during this period.
The two split up to allow Mark returned to his job as a tennis commentator and analyst in 2018. He now works with top channels like Amazon Prime, ITV, the BBC, the Tennis Channel, etc.
