Kiki Bertens was born on December 10, 1991 in Wateringen, the Netherlands. In the Bertens family, in addition to her, there are two more daughters. The girl joined tennis quite early, at the age of six.
Kiki Bertens began in the ITF series in 2009, immediately winning two singles titles and five doubles titles. The following season brought her several more titles and 210th place in the WTA ranking so she was soon invited to the national team.
In June 2011 Bertens made her WTA Series debut with a Wild Card in Hertogenbosch. In spite of the fact that the young player lost her first match to the more experienced Italian Sara Errani, she did not let this deter her. Kiki continued to perfect her game at ITF tournaments, winning five more trophies before her luck finally changed. In the spring of 2012, she won the Grand Prix of Lalla Meriem in Morocco.
The 2012 season was a turning point in the career of the Dutch athlete. She entered the top 100 and had a chance to qualify for Roland Garros, which she took, but lost in the first round of the main draw. In May she defended her WTA Nuremberg title by beating Barbora Krejcikova in the final, and two months later won the main trophy in Gstaad. At the same time, Kiki was playing doubles, winning four WTA titles in tandem with Sweden’s Johanna Larsson.
The Dutchwoman has continued to progress, earning a reputation as a tenacious and resilient player and by spring 2019 she was in the top 5. She has trophies to her credit in Madrid, tournaments in St. Petersburg, Cincinnati, and Seoul.
