Belinda Bencic Career
Belinda Bencic was born on March 10, 1997, in Flawil, Switzerland. Her parents were immigrants who left Czechoslovakia in 1968. The girl showed an early interest in sports and was already enrolled at the age of four at the tennis school of Melanie Molitor – the mother of Martina Hingis. Ten years later, the young athlete entered the prestigious Nick Bollettieri Academy, which gave rise to such masters as Boris Becker, Andre Agassi, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova.
Belinda’s father Ivan, a former professional ice hockey player, was heavily involved in his daughter’s career. His friend Marcel Niederer, impressed by the girl’s success, began to invest in her career in the early noughties and is now the tennis player’s manager.
Bencic made her professional debut early on, reaching the finals at her first tournament. In the 2012 season, she participated in the Junior Grand Slam, where she performed well in doubles, making it to the Wimbledon finals. She ended her year with a winning streak, and the next year she had a breakthrough as she won the Junior Roland Garros, in the final of which she overtook Antonia Lottner by seven break points and one frame. She then went on to win Wimbledon, defeating Taylor Townsend of the United States in the final match.
Bencic first came to prominence at the WTA level as a qualifier in 2011 in Luxembourg. However, her path to the top 100 is not easy: only in the 2014 season she managed to cross the coveted mark thanks to excellent performances at Grand Slams and reaching the final of the tournament in Tianjin. The 2015 season brought the Swiss two WTA titles: the first was won on grass in Eastbourne and the second on hard court in Toronto.
After wrist surgery, Bencic was forced to take a break to rest and recover. However, already in the 2018 season, she regained her footing, making it to the finals of the competition in Luxembourg. The next year began more than well for Belinda: at the tournament in Dubai, she consistently defeated a number of prominent tennis players, starting with Arina Sobolenko and finishing with Petra Kvitova, taking the title.
In August she played well at the U.S. Open, losing only to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu in the semifinals. In the fall, Bencic won one more title in St. Petersburg.
The 2020 season was not very successful for the tennis player: Due to a forced hiatus in her schedule, she played mostly at exhibition tournaments and missed Roland Garros and the U.S. Open.
In 2021, the Swiss tennis player twice reached the finals of the WTA tournaments in Berlin and Adelaide but lost both times. But the highlight of her season was the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she put on a dominant performance, beating several top players to win gold in singles, becoming the first Swiss to do so. She also won silver in doubles with Viktorija Golubic.
The following season, Bencic won just one trophy at a tournament in Charleston, notably her first-ever trophy on the сдфн. Bencic also helped her team win the Billie Jean King Cup in late 2022.
