Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem shared his expectations of a home tournament in Vienna. In last year’s draw of this tournament, Thiem defeated Diego Schwartzman 3/6,6/4,6/3 in the final.
“To start as a reigning champion is always a special feeling. But something incredible is happening this year: look at this grid!
When Novak showed up, the tournament has already become very powerful, and now it is something unimaginable. Probably, this is the best ATP 500 tournament in history. It will be unrealistic to defend the title. It is not an impossible mission, but almost.
Last year I took the title here, nine years after my debut in qualifying. Except for the US Open, Vienna is the most important trophy in my career. Probably one of the most emotional, because I came here every year from the age of four. First, as a spectator who did not understand anything about tennis, and then as a very interesting fan.
Years later I found myself struggling in qualification, and then in the main net – on a wild card. Then – directly in the base, then – first sown. In Vienna I went through all the stages of tennis progress, eventually reaching the title. Last year’s victory is a dream come true.

I really think about this tournament every day, because at each of my matches the stands just broke down. Amazing atmosphere! Three out of five meetings were held in three sets, it was so cool!
I feel great. The pause between the US Open and Roland Garros was very short, but I managed to do it by giving up everything. Of course, I was exhausted after Paris, but I managed to recover in a week of rest. This allowed me to think about the American title. Now I set a new goal for myself. Of course, and Vienna among them, because it is a special tournament for me since I was a child.
I am very happy with my latest results, it’s an incredible year and a half. But it’s also very hard, because there was enough pressure. It wasn’t easy for me, but I’m glad that I won so many victories and realized my ambitions. And even my biggest dream became a reality. Now it is much easier for me to play, I feel better – I am more relaxed. I am happy with myself looking forward to new challenges,” ATP quotes Thiem.
