The famous tennis player took to Twitter to share a series of messages about his thoughts on why the men’s and women’s professional tennis tours should be united. As a result, fans of the racket sport had discussions on the topic.
Federer’s Vision of a Potential Merge
On Wednesday, player Roger Federer used Twitter to share his thoughts. He started talking about the need to merge the women’s and men’s tennis tours, so everyone would come together as one. He wrote, “Am I the only one thinking that now is the time for men’s and women’s tennis to be united and come together as one?”.
Of course, since the online world finds it so much easier to debate people from behind a screen, the tweet exploded. Federer got a lot of supporters, who long wanted for a merge between the two different sides of tennis. Players such as Simona Halep and Mary Pierce have shown their support of Federer’s message. Even his rival, Rafael Nadal, agreed to the message. According to him, it would be great for tennis players to come back from the COVID-19 crisis with a single tennis union.
“Hey @rogerfederer as you know per our discussions I completely agree that it would be great to get out of this world crisis with the union of men’s and women’s tennis in one only organization” was Rafael Nadal’s message, quote tweeting his rival.
Mixed Messages
Among all the support, there have been a few mixed messages and some questioning of Federer’s intent as well.
Vasek Pospisil, who is part of the ATP Player Council with Nadal and Federer, came up with his own message regarding the situation. “Great idea. The ATP has been working on this since they brought the vision forward to us in January”, he said. The way he worded his message may have caused people to think that this merging has been intended way before Federer posted the tweet. As a result, some fans said that Federer and Nadal just wanted the limelight, but others felt like the former champion from Wimbledon was not able to see things for what they are.
Serena Williams also tweeted “That was confidential and not supposed to be shared yet”, but she deleted the tweet.
Final Thoughts
Having ATP and WTA merge would be something that a lot of people will be happy for since so many have waited for it to happen for years. Now that Federer brought attention to it, maybe more people will be supportive of the idea, and we could expect a merge to happen in the future.
