Who Is Dayana Yastremska’s Coach In 2022?

A junior Grand Slam runner up in both singles and doubles, one of the best singers between girl tennis players, a rising star onto the WTA Tour is Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska. 

Dayana Yastremska was born on 15 May 2000 in Odessa, Ukraina. Her father Olexandr is former volleyball player and also served on the Odessa City Council before the War and her mother Marina serve as her mental coach. She has a younger sister with whom she currently lives in Lyon, France, due to war conflict in her native country. Dayana first started playing tennis at age of five, introduced to the game by her grandfather Ivan. As a kid she was trying other sports like swimming and gymnastics, but at age of eight supported by her parents, she made correct decision by choosing to focus on tennis.

Before turning pro she worked with variety of coaches such as former top 100 player Viktoriya Kutuzova and her father, Jean-Rene Lisnard, world No.2 Magnus Norman but mainly by her father Oleksandr. In that period she managed to reach 2016 Wimbledon singles final and 2016 Australian Open doubles final. Dayana also is a music lover and in 2020 during Covid-19 pandemic she began music career and released her first single. The woman who inspired her to pursue a professional tennis career and her idol is Serena Williams.

Who Is Dayana Yastremska’s Current Coach?

Before 2022 US Open, Yastremska appointed Sascha Bajin as her coach, and agreed to discuss all the details regarding their partnership in this period after the tournament.

Sascha Bajin

Sascha Bajin was born on 4 October 1984 in Serbia. He started playing tennis under his father mentorship and played in the second German Bundesliga for tennis club Iphitos Munchen. He quit playing after his father death and later started his coaching career. In 2007 he became Serena Williams hitting partner until 2015, and after that he was hitting partner of Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens and Caroline Wozniacki.

Since the 2018 preseason he started working as Naomi Osaka’s head coach, until February 2019. She had great success during that period; by winning two Grand Slam titles at 2018 US Open and 2019 Australian Open. She also won Indian Wells and reached World No.4.

Then for six months he worked with Kristina Mladenovic who won 2019 French Open in doubles. From November 2020 to July 2022 Sascha worked with Karolina Pliskova. Her most notable result in that period is 2021 Wimbledon final.

As for Dayana Yastremska, he became her head coach in October 2019. She started season 2020 by reaching Adelaide International final, but later didn’t make any significant success. Due to Dayana’s disappointing performance at 2020 US Open they split, but reconnect again this year.

Former Dayana Yastremska’s Coaches

As turned pro in 2017, Dayana occasionally trained in Istanbul with Australian Gavin Hopper, former coach to nine-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles.

Gavin Hopper

Gavin Hopper was the founding professor of Sport Science and coaching department in the Faculty of Health Science and Medicine at Bond University, Australia. He spent 13 years as an elite tennis coach on the ATP and WTA international tennis tours, coaching and training top players such as Marc Philippoussis, Marin Cilic, Tommy Haas, Iva Majoli and many others. He was the Director of Physical Performance for the Lions Football Club for five years as well as the fitness consultant for world record holder and Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Klim. During the past ten years has been a board member of Soul Entertainment Group developing sport facilities in Turkey and Bulgaria. In 2004 he was jailed for three-and-a-half years for sex offences involving a teenage girl.

Gavin was Dayana’s coach until the end of season 2017, a period in which she won ITF tournament Dunakeszi Open in singles and three ITF titles in doubles at Moscow Open, Santa Margherita di Pula and Prague Open.   

From the beginning of 2018, Dayana started training at Justine Henin Academy, under mentorship of tennis coach Olivier Jeunehomme      

Olivier Jeunehomme

Olivier Jeunehomme was born on 22^nd December 1972 in Namur, Belgium. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports & Leisure in 1997. Certified coach through the Royal Belgian Tennis Federation – currently a Level 3 certified coach, the highest level of certification in Belgium. Worked for the R.B.T.F. from 2000-2007 and partners with the Justine Henin Tennis Academy in Belgium where coached tennis players such as Elina Svitolina, Sofia Zhuk, Irina Khromacheva, Ons Jabeur and many more.

He led Sofia Zhuk to the 2016 Junior Wimbledon title and Irina Khromacheva to 2011 Junior Wimbledon final. Currently he is Clara Tauson’s coach and guided her to her two WTA titles so far, at Lyon and Luxmebourg Open.

Training at the Academy and collaborating with Olivier, immediately showed results. She blossomed in that time and won all of her three WTA titles so far, under Olivier’s mentorship. In October 2018 Dayana won her maiden WTA title at Hong Kong Open without dropping a set and rose to No.58 by the end of the year. During that year she also won ITF tournament at 2018 Rome Torneo Internacionale. At the beginning of season 2019 she won Hua Hin Championships in Thailand for her second, and in late May she won Strasbourg Open for her third WTA title.

Despite the excellent results, they parted ways in September 2019, when Dayana was ranked as World No.27 player at the WTA list.
