Bad boy of the Sweden tennis and yet the best ranked Swedish tennis player on the last ATP list is 24-years-old, Mikael Ymer.

Mikael Ymer was born on 9th September 1998 in Skara, Sweden in a family of Ethiopian immigrants. His father Wondwosen works at a dairy company and his mother Kelem is a physician. He has two brothers, Elias and Rafael, who are also tennis players.

As fourteen years old he moved to Stockholm together with his father and older brother Elias to play tennis. They joined Salk Tennis Club and lived in the club’s clubhouse in the early days.

“We moved there in autumn and so we lived in the club house until the outdoor season started in the springs. My father slept in the café and me and Elias slept in a bunk bed in the dressing room. Our days were 8-20 in the tennis hall and then we went straight in and slept. There wasn’t much school.” said Ymer in an interview.

Persistence and hard training gave result. Mikael as a junior in 2012 won the European Championships U14 and in 2015 played the Junior Wimbledon final where he was defeated by Reilly Opelka in straight sets. Same year he claimed his second European Championships title (U18), turned pro and won his first ITF Circuit title at Bastad Open.

Mikael’s favorite surface is hard court and favorite tennis player, Novak Djokovic. He is a close friend with Stefanos Tsitsipas and his family, they know each other since he was eleven and still keep in touch.

Frederik Nielsen

Since beginning of season 2022 Mikael Ymer is coached by former tennis player Frederik Nielsen.

Frederik Lochte Nielsen was born on 27th August 1983 in Lyngby, Denmark. He comes from a tennis family and starts playing tennis at age five. During his twenty-one year’s long pro career which started in 2001, he won three ATP Tour titles playing doubles and 74 titles playing at Challengers and Futures, both in singles and doubles.

He became only the second Danish player to ever win a Grand Slam title, following his grandfather Kurt Nielsen. Playing doubles alongside Jonathan Marray, he won the 2012 Wimbledon.

Frederik grew up idolizing Patrick Rafter, Andre Agassi and Stefan Edberg. Besides tennis, he is big football fan and his favorite club is FC Liverpool. Also, he loves music; enjoys U2, Pearl Jam, Radiohead and Massive Attack. Among his friends he is known for his nickname “The Turtle”.

He was part of Ymer’s coaching staff for the first time in July 2018 when Mikael was preparing for the Swedish Open.
“He will help me when he has the opportunity. So far, we have only been in contact on Facebook and WhatsApp, but what he has seen of my matches and what he said has helped me a lot.” said Ymer.

Since Frederik’s retirement from pro tennis after 2022 Australian Open, he is Mikael’s full-time coach, but they still haven’t won any title together.

However, Mikael improved his tennis under Nielsen mentorship, played his maiden ATP semifinal at the 2022 Firenze Open and moved 20 positions up in the rankings. At the last ATP list, he is ranked as no.60 player in the World, his career best.

Besides coaching Mikael, Nielsen is also a National Coach at the Danish Tennis Federation alongside his Davis Cup duties as team captain.

Former Mikael Ymer’s Coach

Kalle Norberg

Mikael’s coach in Stockholm’s Allmanna Lawntennis Klubb (SALK) for almost ten years was former tennis player, Kalle Norberg.

Kalle Norber was born in 1987 in Uppsala, Sweden. During his playing career he made his elite series debut as a 16-year-old in Upsala Students IF, where he played a few years before he became SALK for one season.

He was a promising young player and played Junior Grand Slam, but after his high school years, he chose to move to the United States and play college tennis for Ole Miss at the University of Mississippi.

During his time at the University, he was a three-time All-SEC selection, member of two SEC Championship winning teams and was named MVP in 2009. After graduating in Hospitality management in 2011, Kalle transitioned from player to coach and came back home to work in his childhood club SALK. There he met Mikael and started their journey together.

Under his guidance, in 2015 Mikael won his maiden title on ITF Circuit, on home soil at Bastad Open. That year he also played Junior Wimbledon final.

Already in the next season, Mikael won his only ATP title so far, playing in doubles alongside with his brother Elias, at Stockholm Open.

Until the end of their collaboration, Ymer managed to win one more ITF title, four Challenger tournament titles and played his first ATP final at Winston-Salem Open.

At the end of season 2021, Kalle ended his coaching job in SALK and Ole Miss University welcomed back their former star as the assistant coach for the Rebels men’s tennis.
