One of the great promises of French tennis coming into the spotlight since the start of this season, the ambitious player with a strong mentality, confident and not running away from the physical battle on the court, is a teenager Arthur Fils.

Arthur Fils was born on 12th June 2004 in Bondoufle, a commune in the Essonne department in northern France. He is one of the three children of Jean-Philippe and Anne Fils. Arthur inherited the love for tennis from his father who was very athletic.

Jean-Phillipe played basketball at a high level when he was young and later started playing recreational tennis, where Arthur followed him since he was five years old. He started playing at the tennis club of Saint-Michel-sur-Orge, then transferred to Bretigny before returning back to his previous club.

The young French also practiced judo, football, swimming, and athletics, before dedicating 100% to tennis. Since 2019, as a talented and promising player, Arthur is training at the Centre National d’Entrainement (CNE) of the French Tennis Federation on daily basis.

Fils’ tennis idol while growing up was Roger Federer. “He was looking really easy on the court and it was nice to watch him play.” When he is not competing on the court, Arthur likes watching basketball and football. Also, he is a fashion fan and his fashion icon is Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton, who is known for his sumptuous clothing which inspires Fils.

Who Is Arthur Fils’s Coach?

Laurent Raymond

Since start of season 2023 Arthur is coached by his compatriot Laurent Raymond.

Laurent Raymond is sixty-years-old tennis coach working at the French Tennis Federation. During his career he was coaching prominent French tennis names such as Fabrice Santoro and Mickael Llodra. After splitting with another French tennis player, Corentine Moutet, at the end of season 2022, he started working with Fils.

Their collaboration immediately showed results. In January, Arthur won his maiden Challenger title at the Oeiras Indoors II and moved near 60 positions at the ATP rankings, entering top 200. Then he reached two ATP semifinals at Open Sud de France and Open 13 Provence, which led him to his career-best ranking of World no.104.

“I did not set him a ranking objective because it is always limiting, confides Laurent Raymond. However, there should be no limit to progress. So, I’ve established a set of steps to cross out as you go, in ascending order. I had put final and victory in Future, but I don’t think he will go back there… Then, final and victory in Challenger. It’s done. Win on the big circuit. It’s done. I also put reaching the last four, winning his first Grand Slam match and having the ranking this year to enter the Grand Slam tables. If we check all these boxes, it will be very good!” said Raymond.

Another big change in his team from the beginning of season 2023 is collaboration with Francisca Dauzet, Daniil Medvedev’s former mental trainer and now in charge of the department at the FFT. Francisca have always been interested in what a human being is, ever since she was little. She was studying transgenerational psychoanalysis and also loves sport, she played tennis at tennis club Bailly-Noisy in the Paris region, so she decided to work in sports psychology.

“I’ve been working with her since the beginning of the year and it’s been working well. She helps me to manage the important moments during the matches, to breathe, to be clear-headed and focused.” said Fils about his mental coach.

With the intention of continuing the good results, Arthur is staying on home soil, as he will compete at The Terega Open Pau-Pyrenees Challenger, starting from 28th February.

Former Arthur Fils’ Coach

Jerome Potier

From the beginning of his days at the CNE Arthur was coached by another Frenchmen, Jerome Potier.

Jerome Potier was born on 18^th July 1962 in Rennes, France. He is former tennis player who turned pro in 1978, hasn’t won any ATP title and had career-best ranking of World no.68. After retirement he started coaching and is part of CNE, where he coached many promising French tennis players. Among others, he worked with Josselin Ouanna, Marc Gicquel and Thierry Ascione.

As for coaching Arthur, he did a great job during his junior years. In 2020 they made a trip to Florida with the ambition of Fils lifting the trophy at Orange Bowl. And made it, he was boys 18 and under champion, with only sixteen.

“It’s definitely a great memory. I was very happy to go to the United States and I immediately loved the atmosphere there. Before the tournament, I felt the ball well in training, without it being exceptional. Then in the first round, I saved a match point… That was the trigger, I think. Afterwards, the matches were all complicated, but I was calm when I hit the ball, I made few mistakes. And I went to the end… Great memory, yes.”

The next season Arthur achieved his best result at the Grand Slam level, by wining 2021 Junior Roland Garros doubles title, playing alongside his friend Giovani Mpetshi Perricard. Also, he was placed runner-up in the boys’ singles tournament, which led him to his career-high junior rank of World no.3.

“Arthur is capable of doing anything. The service is improving, he knows how to manage his matches better and above all he is still very young. He has to be given time and I think a bright future is in front of him.” said Potier about his trainee.

During season 2022, Arthur made his ATP debut by entering the main draw at the Rolex Paris Masters 1000 tournament, which made him the youngest Frenchman to achieve that. At the end of the year Arthur and Jerome ended their collaboration.

“For four years I was with Jerome, he trained me and it went really well. Now it’s time for change and I wish him all the best in future.” commented Arthur about separation with his trainer.
