One of the final tournaments of the season for women is the WTA Finals. The best eight WTA Tour tennis players of the year qualify for the championship. Officially, seven participants are selected, and the organizers can give the last ticket as a special invitation to the winner of the major, who is not high in the ranking. Mexico will host the WTA Finals for the first time. The country should be honored to host its 50th such championship. It is named the Akron WTA Finals Guadalajara in honor of the Akron brand, which specializes in a line of lubricants, fuel additives, automotive and industrial oils.
In 2020, the tournament did not take place because of the coronavirus pandemic, although at the same time the men’s championship in London was held. In 2019, the tournament champion was Australian Ashley Barty, who lost only one match to Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in the group stage. In the semifinals, the world number one defeated Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in three sets, and in the final, she needed two sets to defeat Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
