Maria Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987 in Nyagan and began playing tennis at age four when her family lived in Sochi. Maria was given her first racket by Evgeny Kafelnikov.
At the age of six, Sharapova attended Martina Navratilova’s master class in Moscow. She advised her father to send his daughter to Nick Bolletieri’s academy in Florida. In 1995, Yuri and Maria Sharapov moved to the United States.
The Russian began her professional career in 2001 and made her WTA main draw debut the following season. A year later, Sharapova won her first WTA-level trophies, winning in Tokyo and Quebec.
