Swiss Roger Federer commented on the meeting with Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the semifinals of the tournament in Miami.
“I don’t see much difference between matches with young Rafa and other teenagers. If you are over 23 years old, fights with young rivals always differ from the rest. Perhaps they don’t own all the elements of the game yet, but they don’t need it. They can just hit the ball. That makes them dangerous. I always liked to play with representatives of the new generation, so I’m waiting for the next match.
Grid competition came out very exciting. Isner and I got young and very strong rivals – Auger and Shapovalov. So the semi-finals will definitely be exciting. When Denis and I trained in Toronto several years ago, I was fascinated by his punches and service. Young people will lead the tennis forward when we finish our career. We will follow them on TV. This is quite interesting because they are wonderful people. They are already making a breakthrough, winning major tournaments and defeating top tennis players. Shapovalov have excellent shots. I am delighted with his forehand. And he has the right attitude to the game, he just goes to his goal. We have not played together before. Sure, we are waiting for a great match, “- quoted Federer’s press service ATP.
