Nikoloz Basilashvili is one of the most famous and titled tennis players in the history of Georgia. He was born on February 23, 1992 in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, in the family of a dancer of the Folk Dance Ensemble and a doctor.
Nikoloz started to play tennis very early and fairly quickly determined his professional calling. Already at age 12, he went to the U.S., where he trained under the guidance of experienced mentors. For some time he chose between Russian and Georgian sports citizenship, but eventually he decided to play under the flag of his native country.
Basilashvili made his professional debut in 2009 and won his first Futsal in Sochi that same season. The next few seasons Nikoloz played mostly at ITF tournaments.
In 2014, the Georgian representative debuted on the ATP Tour and then won the first Challenger of his career. A year later, he qualifies for the main draw of several Grand Slam tournaments, but shows the most brilliant results at Wimbledon, reaching the third round of the competition. In the same season the young tennis player receives an official invitation to the national team.
Top 100 Debut
Thanks to his slow but steady progress, Basilashvili soon made it to the finals of the ATP tournament in Kitzbühel for the first time in his career, made his debut at the Olympics and scored his first victory over a top-10 player by beating Tomas Berdych in Vienna. The Georgian finishes the 2016 season in the top 100 of the world singles ranking.
In 2017 Nikoloz continues to improve his results and makes it to the third round of Roland Garros, where he is stopped by the undisputed favorite Rafael Nadal.

However, the 2018 season is a real success for him. Basilashvili made it to the third round of the Australian Open and won his debut ATP trophy in Hamburg. In the final match, the Georgian was stronger than the Argentine Leonardo Mayer, – 6/4,0/6,7/5.
Three months later, he did the same at the ATP 500 championships in Beijing, beating Juan-Martin del Potro of Argentina in the final. Thanks to these successes and good results, Basilashvili moved up in the rankings, rising to No. 21.
High career ranking
Nikoloz makes another career breakthrough in the 2019 season. Not only does he manage to defend his title in Hamburg, defeating Russian Andrey Rublev, but also to perform well again in tournaments of larger categories. In May, the Georgian representative climbed to No. 16 in the singles rankings, which remains his career record so far.
In 2020, Nikoloz did not show good tennis due to the problems associated with the Covid pandemic.

Basilashvili has already achieved a number of excellent results this season. He won the Doha tournament trophy beating Roger Federer, Roberto Bautista-Agut, John Millman and others on his way to the title.
