Grand Prix Hassan II: History Of The Competition
The history of the ATP Marrakesh tournament is relatively short, although Morocco was entrusted to host international competitions in the 80s of the 20th century. The city of Casablanca became the base for tennis players. From 1984 to 1989, the Challenger category championships were held here.
In 1990 ATP Casablanca joined the ATP World Series. At the first tournament in the new format, the famous Austrian Thomas Muster won here. Earlier he had been in the semifinals of the Australian Open, and a few years later won Roland Garros. Until now, the tournament retains its place in the ATP calendar and the category received more than 30 years ago.
In 2016, the license holders changed the city of the tournament, but left it in the same country. Instead of Casablanca, Marrakech took over the organization of the championship.
